The remote-controlled spectrograph, area scanner, and spectropolarimeter for the Lick 3-m telescope

A Cassegrain spectrograph used in conjunction with an image-tube, image-dissector scanner (ITS) is discussed with reference to its design features and operation. The spectrograph has a remote control feature, and its parameters, such as slit width, decker position, filter selection, focus, and grating selection, can be easily changed by computer command or a hard-wired control box. The discussion also includes the area scanner modification which allows raster scanning and limited picture taking. Finally, the design of a two-channel polarization analyzer is presented which allows simultaneous sky and sky-plus-star observations and faint-object polarimetry.

A spectroscopic study of selected quasars with absorption redshifts greater than emission redshifts

Spectroscopic data are presented for seven quasars having absorption systems whose redshift is greater than that of emission lines. The objects examined include PKS 1229-02, 3C 298, 3C 205, B194, PHL 1222, 0736-06, and PKS 0119-04. The redshift systems of each quasar are described in detail, the empirical distribution of the relative numbers of absorption systems vs. emission-absorption redshift difference is determined, and errors in this distribution due to selection of the sample and to the incompleteness and inhomogeneity of the data are discussed qualitatively. Six groups of possibilities are considered for the origin of absorption systems with redshifts higher than the emission redshifts. It is concluded that two separate mechanisms must be invoked: intervening clouds bound in a cluster of galaxies where the quasar is embedded (for systems with an absolute relative velocity not exceeding about 3000 km/s) and gravitational acceleration of material ejected by the quasar (for systems with a relative velocity of at least 3000 km/s).

Engineering study for the functional design of a multiprocessor system

The results are presented of a study to generate a functional system design of a multiprocessing computer system capable of satisfying the computational requirements of a space station. These data management system requirements were specified to include: (1) real time control, (2) data processing and storage, (3) data retrieval, and (4) remote terminal servicing.

Microprogram scheme for automatic recovery from computer error

Microprogram scheme enables computer to recover from failure in one of its two central processing units during time duration of instruction in which failure occurs. Microprogram advantages include - /1/ built-in interpretive capability, /2/ selection of processing interrupts by priority, and /3/ economical use of bootstrap sequence.
