Update on the NASA ER-2 Doppler radar system (EDOP)

An update on the development status of EDOP, a dual-beam Doppler weather radar to be flown on the NASA ER-2 aircraft, is presented. The EDOP system is an X-band Doppler radar with a dual-beam configuration in the ER-2 nose, such that one beam is nadir pointing and the other at an angle of 35 deg forward of the nadir. The dual beams, as used on ELDORA, directed at, e.g., 20 deg fore and aft of the normal to the fuselage, require only a linear rather than L-shaped flight pattern to compute air motions. On the ER-2, EDOP will essentially map out high-resolution time-height sections of reflectivity and vertical hydrometeor velocity from the nadir beam. Flying EDOP with other ground-based and airborne radars will also provide a more complete picture of the overall 3D precipitation and hydrometeor structure of storms.

Multi-mission Ni-H2 battery cells for the 1990's

A sufficient production, test and operational database is now available to permit design technology optimization for the next decade. The evolved battery cell design features standardized technology intended to support multiple type missions (e.g., both GEO and LEO). Design analysis and validation test cells demonstrate that improved performance plus attractive specific-energy characteristics will be achieved.

Planned ER-2 Doppler radar (EDOP) for studying convective storms and mesoscale phenomena

A radar development is presently funded by the NASA Mesoscale Atmospheric Research Program to build an X-band Doppler radar (EDOP) for the ER-2 aircraft for measuring the structure of updrafts and downdrafts in deep convective systems. In this paper, the radar's scientific objectives and characteristics are briefly reviewed. These objectives include documentation of deep isolated thunderstorms, examination of cloud top and anvil structure, structure of microscale convective systems, cloud microphysics, and testing of satellite precipitation estimation algorithms. System specifications for the radar are given.

Test summary for advanced H2 cycle NI-CD cell

To improve operational tolerances and mass, the H2 gas recombination design provisions of the Ni-H2 system were incorporated into the sealed Ni-Cd system. Produced is a cell design capable of operating on the H2 cycle versus the normal O2 cycle. Three test cells have now completed approximately 4,330 LEO (90 minute) cycles at 20 percent depth of discharge (DOD). Performance remains stable although one cell exhibited a temporary pressure anomaly.
