The design and construction of the Chips water Cherenkov neutrino detector

Chips (CHerenkov detectors In mine PitS) was a prototype large-scale water Cherenkov detector located in northern Minnesota. The main aim of the R&D project was to demonstrate that construction costs of neutrino oscillation detectors could be reduced by at least an order of magnitude compared to other equivalent experiments. This article presents design features of the Chips detector along with details of the implementation and deployment of the prototype. While issues during and after the deployment of the detector prevented data taking, a number of key concepts and designs were successfully demonstrated.

Space station automation of common module power management and distribution

The purpose is to automate a breadboard level Power Management and Distribution (PMAD) system which possesses many functional characteristics of a specified Space Station power system. The automation system was built upon 20 kHz ac source with redundancy of the power buses. There are two power distribution control units which furnish power to six load centers which in turn enable load circuits based upon a system generated schedule. The progress in building this specified autonomous system is described. Automation of Space Station Module PMAD was accomplished by segmenting the complete task in the following four independent tasks: (1) develop a detailed approach for PMAD automation; (2) define the software and hardware elements of automation; (3) develop the automation system for the PMAD breadboard; and (4) select an appropriate host processing environment.

Self-synchronizing outer codes for the TDRSS decoder

In this paper, various aspects of developing a self-synchronizing coding system are discussed for NASA's TDRSS satellite system. The coding system used is a concatenation of a (2, 1, 7) inner convolutional code with a (255,223) Reed-Solomon outer code. The goal is to design the decoder in such a way that both symbol and word synchronization are achieved for the outer code without the need for any separate synchronization patten. The system proposed in this paper uses the properties of the inner (Viterbi) decoder to provide symbol synchronization for the outer code, and maintains word synchronization by making use of a coset code of the Reed-Solomon code.

Thematic mapper design parameter investigation

Simulated multispectral data sets used in the Thematic Mapper design parameter investigation are analyzed. The sets were produced by processing high-resolution digital multispectral data through models of the various Thematic Mapper configurations and then through three resampling techniques as a simulation of ground processing. Emphasis is placed on classification processing and analysis of results.

Fluidic pressure regulators

Three basic areas for possible application of fluidic control to rocket engine subsystems were identified and six subsystem configurations were analyzed for study. Results provide indication of tradeoffs involved between conventional and fluidic regulators and should be of interest to control and applications engineers who need to make similar analyses.
