Search for low-mass electron-recoil dark matter using a single-charge sensitive SuperCDMS-HVeV Detector

We present constraints on low mass dark matter-electron scattering and absorption interactions using a SuperCDMS high-voltage eV-resolution (HVeV) detector. Data were taken underground in the NEXUS facility located at Fermilab with an overburden of 225 meters of water equivalent. The experiment benefits from the minimizing of luminescence from the printed circuit boards in the detector holder used in all previous HVeV studies. A blind analysis of $6.1\,\mathrm{g\cdot days}$ of exposure produces exclusion limits for dark matter-electron scattering cross-sections for masses as low as $1\,\mathrm{MeV}/c^2$, as well as on the photon-dark photon mixing parameter and the coupling constant between axion-like particles and electrons for particles with masses $>1.2\,\mathrm{eV}/c^2$ probed via absorption processes.

First Measurement of the Nuclear-Recoil Ionization Yield in Silicon at 100 eV

We measured the nuclear-recoil ionization yield in silicon with a cryogenic phonon-sensitive gram-scale detector. Neutrons from a mono-energetic beam scatter off of the silicon nuclei at angles corresponding to energy depositions from 4 keV down to 100 eV, the lowest energy probed so far. The results show no sign of an ionization production threshold above 100 eV. In conclusion, these results call for further investigation of the ionization yield theory and a comprehensive determination of the detector response function at energies below the keV scale.

A portable and monoenergetic 24 keV neutron source based on 124Sb-9Be photoneutrons and an iron filter

A portable monoenergetic 24 keV neutron source based on the 124Sb-9Be photoneutron reaction and an iron filter has been constructed and characterized. The coincidence of the neutron energy from SbBe and the low interaction cross-section with iron (mean free path up to 29 cm) makes pure iron specially suited to shield against gamma rays from 124Sb decays while letting through the neutrons. To increase the 124Sb activity and thus the neutron flux, a >1 GBq 124Sb source was produced by irradiating a natural Sb metal pellet with a high flux of thermal neutrons in a nuclear reactor. The design of the source shielding structure makes for easy transportation and deployment. A hydrogen gas proportional counter is used to characterize the neutrons emitted by the source and a NaI detector is used for gamma background characterization. At the exit opening of the neutron beam, the characterization determined the neutron flux in the energy range 20–25 keV to be 6.00±0.30 neutrons per cm2 per second and the total gamma flux to be 245±8 gammas per cm2 per second (numbers scaled to 1 GBq activity of the 124Sb source). A liquid scintillator detector is demonstrated to be sensitive to neutrons with incident kinetic energies from 8 to 17 keV, so it can be paired with the source as a backing detector for neutron scattering calibration experiments. This photoneutron source provides a good tool for in-situ low energy nuclear recoil calibration for dark matter experiments and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering experiments.

Development of a large-mass, low-threshold detector system with simultaneous measurements of athermal phonons and scintillation light

For this work, we have combined two low-threshold detector technologies to develop a large-mass, low-threshold detector system that simultaneously measures the athermal phonons in a sapphire detector while an adjacent silicon high-voltage detector detects the scintillation light from the sapphire detector. This detector system could provide event-by-event discrimination between electron and nuclear events due to the difference in their scintillation light yield. While such systems with simultaneous phonon and light detection have been demonstrated earlier with smaller detectors, our system is designed to provide a large detector mass with high amplification for the limited scintillation light. Future work will focus on at least an order of magnitude improvement in the light collection efficiency by having a highly reflective detector housing and custom phonon mask design to maximize light collection by the silicon high-voltage detector.

Low-threshold sapphire detector for rare event searches

Low mass nuclear recoil dark matter and coherent-elastic-neutrino-nucleus-scattering (CE$v$NS) searches confront similar challenges in choosing ultra-low threshold and large-mass detectors. Here, we report experimental results from a 100 g single-crystal sapphire detector design with a diameter of 76 mm and thickness of 4 mm instrumented with transition edge sensors (TES). Sapphire is a crystal of aluminum oxide (Al 2 O) and has been found to be a good candidate for light mass dark matter search experiments due to its lower atomic mass compared to other detector materials such as germanium and silicon. This new phonon-assisted sapphire detector was characterized to yield a baseline recoil energy resolution of 28.4 ± 0.4 eV. The detector is designed to be sensitive to low-energy rare interactions with an intention to investigate the low-mass region of dark matter phase-space and search for CE$v$NS at the reactor site.

Ionization yield measurement in a germanium CDMSlite detector using photo-neutron sources

Two photo-neutron sources, Y 88 Be 9 and Sb 124 Be 9 , have been used to investigate the ionization yield of nuclear recoils in the CDMSlite germanium detectors by the SuperCDMS collaboration. In this study, we evaluate the yield for nuclear recoil energies between 1 and 7 keV at a temperature of ~ 50 mK . We use a geant4 simulation to model the neutron spectrum assuming a charge yield model that is a generalization of the standard Lindhard model and consists of two energy dependent parameters. We perform a likelihood analysis using the simulated neutron spectrum, modeled background, and experimental data to obtain the best fit values of the yield model. The ionization yield between recoil energies of 1 and 7 keV is shown to be significantly lower than predicted by the standard Lindhard model for germanium. There is a general lack of agreement among different experiments using a variety of techniques studying the low energy range of the nuclear recoil yield, which is most critical for interpretation of direct dark matter searches. This suggests complexity in the physical process that many direct detection experiments use to model their primary signal detection mechanism and highlights the need for further studies to clarify underlying systematic effects that have not been well understood up to this point.

Phonon-mediated high-voltage detector with background rejection for low-mass dark matter and reactor coherent neutrino scattering experiments

We report the first demonstration of a phonon-mediated silicon detector technology that provides a primary phonon measurement in a low-voltage region, and a simultaneous indirect measurement of the ionization signal through Neganov-Trofimov-Luke amplification in a high voltage region, both in a monolithic crystal. We present characterization of charge and phonon transport between the two stages of the detector and the resulting background discrimination capability at low energies. Furthermore, this new detector technology has the potential to significantly enhance the sensitivity of dark matter and coherent neutrino scattering experiments beyond the capabilities of current technologies that have limited discrimination at low energies.

Constraints on Lightly Ionizing Particles from CDMSlite

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search low ionization threshold experiment (CDMSlite) achieved effcient detection of very small recoil energies in its germanium target, resulting in sensitivity to Lightly Ionizing Particles (LIPs) in a previously unexplored region of charge, mass, and velocity parameter space. We report first direct-detection limits on the vertical intensity of cosmogenically-produced LIPs with an electric charge smaller than e/(3x10^5), as well as the strongest limits for charge <= e/160, with a minimum vertical intensity of 1.36 x 10^-7 cm^-2s^-1sr^-1 at charge e/160. These results apply over a wide range of LIP masses (5 MeV/c^2 to 100 TeV/c^2) and cover a wide range of beta-gamma values (0.1--10^6), thus excluding non-relativistic LIPs with beta-gamma as small as 0.1 for the first time.

Light Dark Matter Search with a High-Resolution Athermal Phonon Detector Operated Above Ground

We present limits on spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions using a 10.6 g silicon athermal phonon detector with a baseline energy resolution of 4.92 +/- 0.01 eV. This exclusion analysis sets the most stringent dark matter-nucleon cross-section limits for masses from 87--140 MeV/c^2 , with a raw exposure of 9.9 g d acquired at an above-ground facility. This work illustrates the scientic potential of athermal phonon sensors with eV-scale energy resolution for future dark matter searches.

Large mass single electron resolution detector for dark matter and neutrino elastic interaction searches

Large mass single electron resolution solid state detectors are desirable to search for low mass dark matter candidates and to measure coherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering (CEvNS). In this paper we present results from a novel 100 g phonon-mediated Si detector with a new interface architecture. This detector gives a baseline resolution of ~ 1e - /h + pair and a leakage current on the order of 10 -16 A. This was achieved by removing the direct electrical contact between the Si crystal and the metallic electrode, and by increasing the phonon absorption efficiency of the sensors. The phonon signal amplification in the detector shows a linear increase while the signal to noise ratio improves with bias voltage, up to 240 V. This feature enables the detector to operate at a low energy threshold which is beneficial for dark matter and CEvNS like searches.

Constraints on low-mass, relic dark matter candidates from a surface-operated SuperCDMS single-charge sensitive detector

This article presents an analysis and the resulting limits on light dark matter inelastically scattering off of electrons, and on dark photon and axionlike particle absorption, using a second-generation SuperCDMS high-voltage eV-resolution detector. The 0.93 g Si detector achieved a 3 eV phonon energy resolution; for a detector bias of 100 V, this corresponds to a charge resolution of 3% of a single electron-hole pair. The energy spectrum is reported from a blind analysis with 1.2 g-days of exposure acquired in an above-ground laboratory. With charge carrier trapping and impact ionization effects incorporated into the dark matter signal models, the dark matter-electron cross section σ ¯ e is constrained for dark matter masses from 0.5 to 10 4 MeV / c 2 ; in the mass range from 1.2 to 50 eV / c 2 the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter ϵ and the axioelectric coupling constant g a e are constrained. The minimum 90% confidence-level upper limits within the above-mentioned mass ranges are σ ¯ e = 8.7 × 10 - 34 cm 2 , ϵ = 3.3 × 10 - 14 , and g a e = 1.0 × 10 - 9 .

Characterizing TES Power Noise for Future Single Optical-Phonon and Infrared-Photon Detectors

This device has a noise equivalent power of 1.5×10-18 W/Hz, in a bandwidth of 2.6 kHz, indicating a resolution for Dirac delta energy depositions of 40 ± 5 meV (rms). The performance demonstrated by this device is a critical step toward developing a O(100) meV threshold athermal phonon detector for low-mass dark matter searches.

Constraints on dark photons and axionlike particles from the SuperCDMS Soudan experiment

We present an analysis of electron recoils in cryogenic germanium detectors operated during the SuperCDMS Soudan experiment. The data are used to set new constraints on the axioelectric coupling of axion-like particles and the kinetic mixing parameter of dark photons, assuming the respective species constitutes all of the galactic dark matter. This study covers the mass range from 40 eV/$c^2$ to 500 eV/$c^2$ for both candidates, excluding previously untested parameter space for masses below ~1 keV/$c^2$. For the kinetic mixing of dark photons, values below $10^{-15}$ are reached for particle masses around 100 eV/$c^2$; for the axioelectric coupling of axion-like particles, values below $10^{-12}$ are reached for particles with masses in the range of a few-hundred eV/$c^2$.
