Essential role of magnetic frustration in the phase diagrams of doped cobaltites

Doped perovskite cobaltites (e.g., La 1–x Sr x CoO 3 ) have been extensively studied for their spin-state physics, electronic inhomogeneity, and insulator-metal transitions. Ferromagnetically interacting spin-state polarons emerge at low x in the phase diagram of these compounds, eventually yielding long-range ferromagnetism. The onset of long-range ferromagnetism (x≈0.18) is substantially delayed relative to polaron percolation (x≈0.05), however, generating a troubling inconsistency. Here, in this study, Monte Carlo simulations of a disordered classical spin model are used to establish that previously ignored magnetic frustration is responsible for this effect, enabling faithful reproduction of the magnetic phase diagram.

Superconducting properties of the spin Hall candidate Ta 3 Sb with eightfold degeneracy

We report the synthesis and characterization of phase pure Ta 3 Sb, a material predicted to be topological with eightfold degenerate fermionic states [Bradlyn et al., Science 353, aaf5037 (2016)] and to exhibit a large spin Hall effect [Derunova et al., Sci. Adv. 5, eaav8575 (2019)]. We observe superconductivity in Ta 3 Sb with T c ~0.67 K in both electrical resistivity ρ(T) and specific heat c(T) measurements. Field-dependent measurements yield the superconducting phase diagram with an upper critical field of H c2 (0) ~0.95 T, corresponding to a superconducting coherence length of ξ ≈ 18.6 nm. The gap ratio deduced from specific heat anomaly, 2Δ 0 /k B T c is 3.46, a value close to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer value of 3.53. From a detailed analysis of both the transport and thermodynamic data within the Ginsburg-Landau (GL) framework, a GL parameter of κ ≈ 90 is obtained, identifying Ta 3 Sb as an extreme type-II superconductor. The observation of superconductivity in an eightfold degenerate fermionic compound with topological surface states and predicted large spin Hall conductance positions Ta 3 Sb as an appealing platform to further explore exotic quantum states in multifold degenerate systems.

Competing Charge/Spin-Stripe and Correlated Metal Phases in Trilayer Nickelates (Pr 1– x La x ) 4 Ni 3 O 8

We report low valent nickelates R n+1 Ni n O 2n+2 (R = rare earth) containing Ni 1+ (d 9 ) with a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) square-planar coordination geometry possess structural and electronic properties that are similar to those of high T c cuprates, including superconductivity itself in the doped infinite-layer (n = ∞) RNiO 2 system. Within this R n+1 Ni n O 2n+2 nickelate family, the crystallographic isomorphs Pr 4 Ni 3 O 8 and La 4 Ni 3 O 8 exhibit singularly different ground states: Pr 4 Ni 3 O 8 is metallic, and La 4 Ni 3 O 8 is a charge- and spin-stripe-ordered insulator. To explore and understand the ground state evolution from metallic Pr 4 Ni 3 O 8 to stripe-ordered La 4 Ni 3 O 8 in the R 4 Ni 3 O 8 family, we have grown a series of isovalent, substituted single crystals (Pr 1-x La x ) 4 Ni 3 O 8 . Combining thermodynamic, transport, magnetic, and synchrotron X-ray single crystal diffraction measurements, we reveal a T = 0 transition between metallic and stripe-insulator phase regions, with this putative quantum phase transition at x ≈ 0.45. We propose two possible models for (Pr 1-x La x ) 4 Ni 3 O 8 : an electronically inhomogeneous system that could serve as a candidate for exploring quantum Griffiths phase physics or a homogeneous system with a clean quantum critical point at the phase boundary

Magnetic terahertz resonances above the Néel temperature in the frustrated kagome antiferromagnet averievite

Time-domain magneto-THz spectroscopy is utilized to study the frustrated magnet averievite Cu 5–x Zn x V 2 O 10 (CsCl). Pronounced THz resonances are observed in unsubstituted samples (x = 0) when cooling below the onset of short-range magnetic correlations. The influence of external magnetic effects confirms the magnetic origin of these resonances. Increasing Zn substitution suppresses the resonances, as frustration effects dominate, reflecting the nonmagnetic phases for x > 0.25 compounds. The temperature evolution of the THz spectra is complemented with electron spin resonance spectroscopy. This comparison allows a direct probe of the different contributions from magnetic order, frustration, and structural properties in the phase diagram of averievite. Furthermore, our results illustrate the effect of magnetic interactions in THz spectra of frustrated magnets.

Nontrivial Fermi surface topology of the kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 probed by de Haas–van Alphen oscillations

Here, we have investigated the normal state Fermi-surface properties of the kagome superconductor CsV 3 Sb 5 using torque magnetometry with applied fields (H) up to 35 T. The torque signal shows clear de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations above 15 T. The oscillations are smooth and consist of seven distinct frequencies with values from similar to ~18 T to 2135 T. The presence of higher frequencies in CsV 3 Sb 5 is further confirmed by carrying out additional measurements using the tunnel diode oscillator technique. All frequencies measured at different tilt angles (θ) of the field direction with respect to the c axis show a 1/cosθ dependence, implying that the Fermi surfaces corresponding to these frequencies are two dimensional (2D). The absence of dHvA oscillations at θ = 90° further supports the presence of 2D Fermi surfaces. The Berry phase (φ) determined from the Landau level fan diagram for all frequencies is similar to ~ 0.4. This value is close to the theoretical value of φ = 0.5 for a nontrivial system, which strongly supports the nontrivial topology of the Fermi surfaces of these frequencies. Several quantities characterizing the Fermi surface are calculated employing the Lifshitz-Kosevich theory. These findings are crucial for exploring the interplay between nontrivial band topology, charge-density wave, and unconventional superconductivity of CsV 3 Sb 5 .

Canted antiferromagnetic order and spin dynamics in the honeycomb-lattice compound Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9

Here, single-crystal neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, bulk magnetization measurements, and first-principles calculations are used to investigate the magnetic properties of the honeycomb lattice Tb 2 Ir 3 Ga 9 . While the R ln 2 magnetic contribution to the low-temperature entropy indicates a J eff = 1 / 2 moment for the lowest-energy crystal-field doublet, the Tb 3 + ions form a canted antiferromagnetic structure below 12.5 K. Due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, the Tb moments in the a b plane are slightly canted towards b with a canted moment of 1.22 μ B per formula unit. A minimal x x z spin Hamiltonian is used to simultaneously fit the spin-wave frequencies along the high-symmetry directions and the field dependence of the magnetization along the three crystallographic axes. Long-range magnetic interactions for both in-plane and out-of-plane couplings up to the second nearest neighbors are needed to account for the observed static and dynamic properties. The z component of the exchange interactions between Tb moments is larger than the x and y components. This compound also exhibits bond-dependent exchange with negligible nearest-neighbor exchange coupling between moments parallel and perpendicular to the 4 f orbitals. Despite the J eff = 1 / 2 moments, the spin Hamiltonian is denominated by a large in-plane anisotropy K z ~ – 1 meV . DFT calculations confirm the antiferromagnetic ground state and the substantial interplane coupling at larger Tb-Tb distances.

Optical magnons with dominant bond-directional exchange interactions in the honeycomb lattice iridate α — Li 2 IrO 3

We have used resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to reveal optical magnons in a honeycomb lattice iridate α - Li 2 IrO 3 . The spectrum in the energy region 20–25 meV exhibits momentum dependence, of which energy is highest at the location of the magnetic Bragg peak, ( h , k ) = ( ± 0.32 , 0 ) , and lowered toward ( 0 , 0 ) and ( ± 1 , 0 ) . We compare our data with a linear spin-wave theory based on a generic nearest-neighbor spin model. We find that a dominant bond-directional Kitaev interaction of order 20 meV is required to explain the energy scale observed in our study. The observed excitations are understood as stemming from optical magnon modes whose intensity is modulated by a structure factor, resulting in the apparent momentum dependence. We also observed diffuse magnetic scattering arising from the short-range magnetic correlation well above T N . In contrast to Na 2 IrO 3 , this diffuse scattering lacks the C 3 rotational symmetry of the honeycomb lattice, suggesting that the bond anisotropy is far from negligible in α - Li 2 IrO 3 .

Dynamically Stable Active Sites from Surface Evolution of Perovskite Materials during the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Perovskite oxides are an important class of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts in alkaline media, despite the elusive nature of their active sites. In this work, we demonstrate that the origin of the OER activity in a La 1-x SrxCoO 3 model perovskite arises from a thin surface layer of Co hydr(oxy)oxide (CoO x H y ) that interacts with trace-level Fe species present in the electrolyte, creating dynamically stable active sites. Generation of the hydr(oxy)oxide layer is a consequence of a surface evolution process driven by the A-site dissolution and O-vacancy creation. In turn, this imparts a 10-fold improvement in stability against Co dissolution and a 3-fold increase in the activity-stability factor for CoO x H y / LSCO when compared to nanoscale Co-hydr(oxy)oxides clusters. Our results suggest new design rules for active and stable perovskite oxide-based OER materials.

Competing magnetic phases and fluctuation-driven scalar spin chirality in the kagome metal YMn 6 Sn 6

Identification, understanding, and manipulation of novel magnetic textures are essential for the discovery of new quantum materials for future spin-based electronic devices. In particular, materials that manifest a large response to external stimuli such as a magnetic field are subject to intense investigation. Here, we study the kagome-net magnet YMn 6 Sn 6 by magnetometry, transport, and neutron diffraction measurements combined with first-principles calculations. We identify a number of nontrivial magnetic phases, explain their microscopic nature, and demonstrate that one of them hosts a large topological Hall effect (THE). We propose a previously unidentified fluctuation-driven mechanism, which leads to the THE at elevated temperatures. This interesting physics comes from parametrically frustrated interplanar exchange interactions that trigger strong magnetic fluctuations. Our results pave a path to chiral spin textures, promising for novel spintronics.

Intertwined density waves in a metallic nickelate

Nickelates are a rich class of materials, ranging from insulating magnets to superconductors. But for stoichiometric materials, insulating behavior is the norm, as for most late transition metal oxides. Notable exceptions are the 3D perovskite LaNiO 3 , an unconventional paramagnetic metal, and the layered Ruddlesden-Popper phases R 4 Ni 3 O 10 , (R = La, Pr, Nd). The latter are particularly intriguing because they exhibit an unusual metal-to-metal transition. Here, we demonstrate that this transition results from an incommensurate density wave with both charge and magnetic character that lies closer in its behavior to the metallic density wave seen in chromium metal than the insulating stripes typically found in single-layer nickelates like La 2-x Sr x NiO 4 . We identify these intertwined density waves as being Fermi surface-driven, revealing a novel ordering mechanism in this nickelate that reflects a coupling among charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom that differs not only from the single-layer materials, but from the 3D perovskites as well.

High oxygen pressure floating zone growth and crystal structure of the metallic nickelates R4Ni3O10 ( R=La,Pr )

Single crystals of the metallic Ruddlesden-Popper trilayer nickelates R 4 Ni 3 O 10 ( R = La , Pr ) were successfully grown using an optical-image floating zone furnace under oxygen pressure ( p O 2 ) of 20 bar for La 4 Ni 3 O 10 and 140 bar for Pr 4 Ni 3 O 10 . Furthermore, a combination of synchrotron and laboratory x-ray single-crystal diffraction, high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction and measurements of physical properties revealed that R 4 Ni 3 O 10 ( R = La , Pr ) crystallizes in the monoclinic P 2 1 / a ( Z = 2 ) space group at room temperature, and that a metastable orthorhombic phase ( Bmab ) can be trapped by postgrowth rapid cooling. Both La 4 Ni 3 O 10 and Pr 4 Ni 3 O 10 crystals undergo a metal-to-metal transition (MMT) below room temperature. In the case of Pr 4 Ni 3 O 10 , the MMT is found at 157.6 K. For La 4 Ni 3 O 10 , the MMT depends on the lattice symmetry: 147.5 K for Bmab vs 138.6 K for P 2 1 / a . Lattice anomalies were found at the MMT that, when considered together with the pronounced dependence of the transition temperature on subtle structural differences between Bmab and P 2 1 / a phases, demonstrate a not insignificant coupling between electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in these trilayer nickelates.

Electronic coupling in square planar La 4 Ni 3 O 8

A study of a dd excitation in La4Ni 3 O 8 (La-438) using x-ray absorption scattering (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ni K-edge is presented here. The incident energy dependence of this dd excitation shows a maximum at the 1s→4p π transition. Its intensity at the main edge is proportional to the amount of incident x-ray polarization parallel to the c-axis. These observations suggest that the RIXS process underlying this excitation includes a strong Ni 3d-Ni 4p Coulomb interaction and excludes the “4p-as-spectator” approximation. The dominant Ni 3d Coulomb interaction is with Ni 4p π with limited or no interaction with the Ni 4p σ . An insulating gap closing is observed as a function of temperature.

Oxygen Inhomogeneity and Reversibility in Single Crystal LaNiO{sub 3-{delta}}.

LaNiO 3− δ single crystals have been obtained via high pressure floating zone growth under 149 bar of oxygen pressure. We find a radial gradient in the magnetic properties of specimens extracted from the as-grown boule, which we correlate with the appearance of ordered oxygen vacancy structures. This radial oxygen inhomogeneity has been characterized systematically using a combination of magnetization and X-ray scattering measurements. We establish the presence of rhombohedral ( R 3 ¯ c ), oxygen stoichiometric specimens at the periphery of the boule and the presence of a dilute concentration of ordered oxygen-deficient orthorhombic La 2 Ni 2 O 5 in the center. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the as-grown, oxygen-deficient central regions of the crystal can be annealed under high oxygen pressure, without loss of crystallinity, into fully oxygenated LaNiO 3 , recovering magnetic properties that are characteristic of stoichiometric specimens from the exterior region of the crystal. Thus, single crystals of LaNiO 3− δ possess oxygen content that can be reversibly modified under oxidizing and reducing conditions.

Fermi surface topology and nontrivial Berry phase in the flat-band semimetal Pd 3 Pb

A study of the Fermi surface of the putative topological semimetal Pd 3 Pb has been carried out using Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH) oscillations measured in fields of up to 60 T. Pd 3 Pb has garnered attention in the community due to a peculiar Fermi surface that has been proposed theoretically by Ahn, Pickett, and Lee, Phys. Rev. B 98 , 035130 (2018) to host a dispersionless band along X - Γ as well as multiple triply degenerate band crossings that, under the influence of spin-orbit coupling, lead to ten fourfold degenerate Dirac points. Analysis of the SdH oscillation data verifies the calculated multisheet Fermi surface, revealing a Γ centered spheroid that had not been resolved experimentally in prior studies. A comprehensive, angle-dependent analysis of the phase of the SdH oscillations convincingly demonstrates a nontrivial Berry phase for two bands along Γ - R , supporting the theoretical predictions, while simultaneously evidencing interference between extremal orbits that mimics a trivial Berry phase at intermediate angles.

Unprecedented non-hysteretic superelasticity of [001]-oriented NiCoFeGa single crystals

Superelasticity associated with the martensitic transformation has found a broad range of engineering applications. However, the intrinsic hysteresis and temperature sensitivity of the first-order phase transformation significantly hinder the usage of smart metallic components in many critical areas. In this paper, we report a large superelasticity up to 15.2% strain in [001]-oriented NiCoFeGa single crystals, exhibiting non-hysteretic mechanical responses, a small temperature dependence and high-energy-storage capability and cyclic stability over a wide temperature and composition range. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements show that the superelasticity is correlated with a stress-induced continuous variation of lattice parameter accompanied by structural fluctuation. Neutron diffraction and electron microscopy observations reveal an unprecedented microstructure consisting of atomic-level entanglement of ordered and disordered crystal structures, which can be manipulated to tune the superelasticity. The discovery of the large elasticity related to the entangled structure paves the way for exploiting elastic strain engineering and development of related functional materials. NiCoFeGa single crystals exhibit large non-hysteretic superelasticity over broad temperature and composition ranges. It is attributed to the continuous phase transition with applied stress, which is related to the fluctuation of entangled ordered and disordered crystal structures.

Stability, precision, and near-24-hour period of the human circadian pacemaker

Regulation of circadian period in humans was thought to differ from that of other species, with the period of the activity rhythm reported to range from 13 to 65 hours (median 25.2 hours) and the period of the body temperature rhythm reported to average 25 hours in adulthood, and to shorten with age. However, those observations were based on studies of humans exposed to light levels sufficient to confound circadian period estimation. Precise estimation of the periods of the endogenous circadian rhythms of melatonin, core body temperature, and cortisol in healthy young and older individuals living in carefully controlled lighting conditions has now revealed that the intrinsic period of the human circadian pacemaker averages 24.18 hours in both age groups, with a tight distribution consistent with other species. These findings have important implications for understanding the pathophysiology of disrupted sleep in older people.
