ASCA observations of the warm absorber in MCG-6-30-15: The discovery of a change in column density

We report the first X-ray observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 obtained at medium spectral resolution. The partially-ionized, 'warm' absorber is resolved and shown to be due to O VII and O VIII. The main absorption edge agrees with that of O VII at the redshift of the galaxy to within 1%. The column density of the absorbing material is greater by a factor of 2 in the first of our two obsevations, which were 3 weeks apart, while the mean flux is slightly lower and the ionization parameter slightly higher. We also discuss the flourescent iron emssion line seen in the source, which is at 6.40 keV. The line is significantly broadened, with a Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of about 0.4 keV.

Resolving the Cygnus X-3 iron K line

An Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) observation of Cygnus X-3 on 1993 June 11, in its X-ray high intensity state, has for the first time resolved the broad iron K line emission into three components: a He-like line at 6.67 +/- 0.01 keV, a H-like line at 6.96 +/- 0.02 keV, and a neutral line at 6.37 +/- 0.03 keV. The line intensities of the 6.67 keV and 6.96 keV lines are modulated with the 4.8 hr orbital period and are maximum when the continuum intensity is minimum. There is a sharp minimum of the line intensity on the rising phase of the continuum intensity. An iron absorption edge is observed at 7.19 +/- 0.02 keV. The optical depth of the absorption edge varies from 0.3 to 0.5 and is in anti-phase with the overall X-ray continuum modulation. The observed complexity of the iron K line region is greater than that had been assumed in previous spectral modeling based on observations with lower resolution detectors.

Soft X-ray spectral features in the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC4051

We report ASCA observations of NGC 4051 during the PV phase. The time averaged X-ray spectrum is not well fit by a simple power law with an iron K-emission line and shows significant absorption-edge features most probably due to O VII and O VIII and a strong soft excess. This is the first direct measurement of edges in the spectrum of this object and confirms that the X-ray spectrum of NGC 4051 is modified by a 'warm' absorbing gas. The best fit underlying power law index in the 0.4-10 keV band is 1.88. A power law modified by a warm absorber model can partly explain the apparent soft excess and qualitatively fit the SIS spectrum. However, the addition of a black body of kT approx. = 0.1 keV improves the fit considerably. The 90% upper limit on the width of the iron line is 460 eV full width at half maximum (FWHM). Applying the fluorescent iron line model from an accretion disk gives an upper limit of 20 deg for the inclination of the disk.

Decrease in the orbital period of Hercules X-1

From a pulse-timing analysis of Ginga observations of the binary X-ray pulsar Her X-1 obtained during the interval 1989 April-June local orbital parameters are determined for a short high state. An orbital epoch is also determined in the adjacent main high state. By comparing these orbital solutions with previously published results, a decrease is detected in the orbital period for Her X-1 over the interval 1971-1989. The value is substantially larger than the value predicted from current estimates of the mass-transfer rate, and motivates consideration of other mechanisms of mass transfer and/or mass loss. A second result from these observations is a close agreement between orbital parameters determined separately in main high and short high states. This agreement places strong constraints on the obliquity of the stellar companion, HZ Her, if undergoing forced precession with a 35-day period. As a consequence further doubt is placed on the slaved-disk model as the underlying cause of the 35-day cycle in Her X-1.

Decrease in the Orbital Period of Hercules X-1

From a pulse-timing analysis of Ginga observations of the binary X-ray pulsar Her X-1 obtained during the interval 1989 April-June we have determined local orbital parameters for a Short High state. We have also determined an orbital epoch in the adjacent Main High state. By comparing these orbital solutions with previously published results, we have detected a decrease in the orbital period for Her X-1 at an average rate of dot-P/P = (- 1.32 +/- 0.16) x 10(exp -8) yr(exp -1) over the interval 1971-1989. This is substantially larger than the value predicted from current estimates of the mass transfer rate, and motivates consideration of other mechanisms of mass transfer and/or mass loss. A second result from these observations is a close agreement between orbital parameters determined separately in Main High and Short High states. This agreement places strong constraints on the obliquity of the stellar companion, HZ Her, if undergoing forced precession with a 35 day period. As a consequence further doubt is placed on the slaved-disk model as the underlying cause of the 35 day cycle in Her X-1.
