Studies of the outer-off-midplane lower hybrid wave launch scenario for plasma start-up on the TST-2 spherical tokamak

Abstract Establishment of an efficient central solenoid (CS) free tokamak plasma start-up method may lead to an economical fusion reactor. CS-free start-up using lower hybrid (LH) waves has been studied on the TST-2 spherical tokamak. Plasma current of about a quarter of CS-driven discharges has been obtained fully non-inductively using the outer-midplane and top LH launchers. Recently, an outer-off-midplane LH launcher was developed to achieve higher plasma current by optimizing for core absorption and minimal fast electron losses. Using the (outer-)off-midplane launcher, fully non-inductive plasma current start-up up to about 8 kA was achieved. Coupled ray-tracing and Fokker–Planck simulation was performed on equilibria reconstructed with an extended MHD model. It was found that the experimentally observed plasma current was in reasonable agreement with the numerical simulation. The simulation predicted appreciable orbit losses for the off-midplane launcher driven discharge at the present parameters, which was consistent with the experimentally observed x-ray radiation characteristics. The simulation showed that the current density was saturated for the present off-midplane launcher discharges and higher density and higher LH power was necessary to achieve higher plasma current.

PROGRESS ON MAGNETRON R&DS FOR INDUSTRIAL PARTICLE ACCELERATORS

The magnetron as an efficient RF source for a compact industrial SRF accelerator has been developed. The per-formance of injection phase lock on two independent magnetron transmitters operated at 915MHz, in CW mode with maximum power of 75kW each has been demon-strated to satisfy this application. This industrial type magnetron has AC transformer and the SCR rectifier on the DC anode power supply. Output power spectrum with phase locking can achieve noise reduction of -21.2 dBc at the 1st 60 Hz, -28.0 dBc at 1st 180 Hz with only -22.6 dBc injection power. Further control studies for 2×75 kW, 915 MHz power combing by WR975 magic-tee at Jefferson Lab (JLab) and for 4×1.2 kW, 2.45 GHz power combing by WR340 magic-tee at General Atomics (GA).

Investigation of cloud properties and atmospheric stability with MODIS

The last half year was spent in preparing Version 1 software for delivery, and culminated in transfer of the Level 2 cloud mask production software to the SDST in April. A simulated MODIS test data set with good radiometric integrity was produced using MAS data for a clear ocean scene. ER-2 flight support and MAS data processing were provided by CIMSS personnel during the Apr-May 96 SUCCESS field campaign in Salina, Kansas. Improvements have been made in the absolute calibration of the MAS, including better characterization of the spectral response for all 50 channels. Plans were laid out for validating and testing the MODIS calibration techniques; these plans were further refined during a UW calibration meeting with MCST.
