In situ energetics modulation enables high-efficiency and stable inverted perovskite solar cells

In contrast to conventional (n-i-p) perovskite solar cells (PSCs), inverted (p-i-n) PSCs offer enhanced stability and integrability with tandem solar cell architectures, which have garnered increasing interest. However, p-i-n cells suffer from energy level misalignment with transport layers, imbalanced transport of photo-generated electrons and holes, and significant defects with the perovskite films. Here we introduce tris(2,4,6-trimethyl-3-(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)borane (3TPYMB), a nonionic n-type molecule that, through hydrogen bonding and Lewis acid-base reactions with perovskite surfaces or grain boundaries, enables in situ modulation of perovskite energetics, effectively mitigating the key challenges of p-i-n PSCs. The p-i-n PSCs incorporating 3TPYMB achieve a certified quasi-steady-state power conversion efficiency of 24.55 +- 0.33%, with a reverse scan efficiency of 25.58%. Finally, they also exhibit exceptional stability, with unencapsulated devices retaining 97.8% of their initial efficiency after 1,800 h of continuous operation at maximum power point under N 2 atmosphere, 1 sun illumination and 60 °C conditions.

Photoactivated p-Doping of Organic Interlayer Enables Efficient Perovskite/Silicon Tandem Solar Cells

Solution-processed organic semiconductor layers on rough surfaces tend to vary widely in thickness, significantly hindering charge extraction in relevant optoelectronic devices. Herein, we report the photoactivated p-doping of hole-transporting material (HTM) to enhance hole extraction for (textured) perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, making the device performance less sensitive to the variation of hole transport layer thickness. We used the ionic compound 4-isopropyl-4'-methyldiphenyliodonium tetrakis(penta-fluorophenyl-borate) (DPI-TPFB) as a p-type dopant in poly(triaryl amine) (PTAA), which we used as the HTM. We observed that light soaking DPI-TPFB-doped PTAA shows approximately 22 times higher conductivity compared with an undoped PTAA film, which translated into an improved fill factor (FF) for tandem solar cells. Our tandem solar cells achieved an ~80% FF and 27.8% efficiency and operated at their maximum power point for 200 h without loss of performance, in addition to retaining ~83% of initial performance over a month of operation in an outdoor environment.

Single-Particle Spectroscopy as a Versatile Tool to Explore Lower-Dimensional Structures of Inorganic Perovskites

The remarkable defect tolerant nature of inorganic cesium halide perovskites leading to near unity photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) and narrow emission linewidth across the entire visible spectrum, have provided a tantalizing platform for a development of a plethora of light-emitting applications. Recently, lower dimensional (2D, 1D, and 0D) perovskites have attracted further attention due to the enhanced thermal, photo and chemical stability as compared to their three-dimensional (3D) analogues. Combination of the external size quantization and internal octahedral organization provides a unique opportunity to study and harness “multidimensional” electronic properties engineered both on atomic scale and the nanoscale. However, crucial research to understand the elementary charge carrier dynamics in lower dimensional perovskites lags far behind the enormous effort to incorporate them into optoelectronic devices. In this Perspective, we provide a review of recent developments that focus on studies of the dynamics of excitonic complexes in Cs-based perovskite nanocrystals using single-particle time-resolved PL spectroscopy and photon correlation measurements. Single photon statistical studies not only offer the unprecedented level of detail to directly assess various recombination pathways but also provide insights into specifics of carrier’s localization. Further, we discuss the underlying physicochemical processes that govern PL emission and draw attention to a number of attributes within this class of the materials, especially lower-dimensional perovskites that may indicate the common origin of the PL emission, as well as provide a route map for the vast unexplored territories where single particle spectroscopy can be a powerful tool to unravel crucial information.

Concentrated dual-cation electrolyte strategy for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Rechargeable Zn-ion batteries are highly promising for stationary energy storage because of their low cost and intrinsic safety. However, due to the poor reversibility of Zn anodes and dissolution of oxide cathodes, aqueous Zn-ion batteries encounter rapid performance degradation when operating in conventional low-concentration electrolytes. Herein, we demonstrate that an aqueous Zn2+ electrolyte using a supporting Na salt at a high concentration is efficient to address these issues without sacrificing the power densities, cycling stability, and safety of zinc-ion batteries. We show that the high-concentration solute minimizes the number of free water molecules and the changes in the electronic state of the electrolyte. A combination of experimental and theoretical investigations reveals that a unique interphase, formed on the Zn anode, enables reversible and uniform Zn plating. Utilizing a cathode of sodium vanadate synthesized through a scalable strategy, the Zn–sodium vanadate battery with the concentrated bi-cation electrolyte shows improved cycling stability, decent rate performance, and low self-discharge. This work provides new insights on electrolyte engineering to achieve high-performance aqueous batteries.
