Impedance model for the Fermilab Recycler ring

We present an impedance model of the Fermilab Recycler ring using PyHEADTAIL. The model is constructed by incorporating analytical expressions for the wakefields of beamline components that contribute significantly to impedance. The effects of indirect space charge are included as an inductive impedance. Benchmarking against measured coherent Betatron tune shifts, the impedance model is found to capture 73.4% of observed tune shifts. Our findings serve as a stepping stone for the development of a realistic impedance model crucial for studying impedance-driven instabilities at higher intensity.

Measurement of stability diagrams in the IOTA ring at Fermilab

Nonlinear focusing elements can enhance the stability of particle beams in high-energy colliders through Landau Damping, by means of the tune spread which is introduced. Here we discuss an experiment at Fermilab's Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) which investigates the influence of nonlinear focusing elements, such as octupoles, on the beam’s transverse stability. In this experiment, we employ an anti-damper, an active transverse feedback system, as a controlled mechanism to induce coherent beam instability. By utilizing the anti-damper we can examine the impact of a nonlinear focusing element on the beam's transverse stability. The stability diagram, a tool used to determine the system's stability, is measured using a recently demonstrated method at the LHC. The experiment at IOTA adds insight towards this stability diagram measurement method by supplying a reduced machine impedance to investigate the machine impedance’s effect on the stability diagram, as well as by aiming to map out the full stability diagram by using a large phase range of the anti-damper. From this experiment in IOTA, we present the first results of stability diagram analysis with varying octupole currents.

Investigation of Tail-dominated Instability in the Fermilab Recycler Ring

In our recent operational run, a single bunch, tail-dominated instability was observed in the Fermilab Recycler ring. This instability exclusively occurs in the vertical plane when the chromaticity is close to zero. In this study, we conduct a detailed analysis of this instability under different operational parameters. We investigate the impact of space charge on the head-tail motion and propose potential interpretations of the underlying mechanism of the instability. Moreover, we explore methods to mitigate this instability in the future.

Shape tuning of large area silicon nanotip arrays through reactive ion etching

Nanostructures formed in silicon form an important class of structures that span a broad spectrum of application areas. Of these, columnar structures of silicon featuring tiplike apexes have their own niche applications. Here, the ability to afford shape tunability for these structures further enhances their application potential. In this paper, we present our findings on the large area fabrication of silicon nanotips defined through microsphere lithography and shape tuned through a combination of different reactive ion etching (RIE) techniques. The self-sharpening mechanism of the tips when using nonplanar etch masks (microspheres) under anisotropic etching conditions is elucidated. We further show that depending on the manner of etching (continuous versus discrete multistep etch), identical anisotropic etching recipes produce vastly different tip morphologies. Hourglass-shaped silicon tips were obtained when silicon was subjected to anisotropic followed by isotropic etching conditions. Sharp silicon tips with tip apex radii on the order of 2 nm have been successfully realized when the RIE shape tuned tips were subjected to a series of oxidative sharpening steps.

Waker Experiments at Fermilab Recycler Ring

Attaining high-intensity hadron beams is often limited due to the transverse collective instabilities, whose understanding is thus required to see and possibly extend the intensity limitations. To explore such instabilities, a novel artificial wake system, the waker, has been built and tested at the Fermilab Recycler Ring (RR). In this report, we show recent upgrades of the waker. Also, we present experimental studies of instabilities at various space charge and wake parameters.

Improvements to the Recycler/Main Injector to Deliver 850 kW+

The Main Injector is used to deliver a 120 GeV high power proton beam for Neutrino experiments. The design power of 700 kW was reached in early 2017 but further improvements have seen a new sustained peak power of 893 kW. Two of the main improvements include the shortening of the Main Injector ramp length as well optimizing the slip-stacking procedure performed in the Recycler to reduce the amount of uncaptured beam making its way into the Main Injector. These improvements will be discussed in this paper as well future upgrades to reach higher beam powers.
