Surface-state limbo
The combination of magnetic and non-magnetic layers in (MnBi 2 Te 4 )(Bi 2 Te 3 ) is predicted to produce topologically protected states on the surface. We discuss experiments that now show that the nature of the topmost layer controls the location of these states.
