Degrade-Repair Cycle of a Fuel-Forming Photoelectrode

Artificial leaves that produce fuels using sunlight hold promise for sustainably powering the planet, but they require advance- ments in energetic efficiency, cost effectiveness, and operational durability. Herein, we showcase the application of combined surface- sensitive spectroscopic techniques to durability studies that characterize structural changes accompanying functional degradation and go beyond just observing changes in function over time. Further, the photoelectrodes used in this work feature a polymeric surface coating functionalized with molecular complexes that catalyze the hydrogen evolution reaction. Using a polymeric layer to interface the light-harvesting component with catalytic sites enables reassembly of catalysts that detach during operation, establishing a degrade-repair cycle.

Parallels between enzyme catalysis, electrocatalysis, and photoelectrosynthesis

Catalysts are central to accelerating chemistry in biology and technology. In biochemistry, the relationship between the velocity of an enzymatic reaction and the concentration of chemical substrates is described via the Michaelis-Menten model. Additionally, the modeling and benchmarking of synthetic molecular electrocatalysts are also well developed. However, such efforts have not been as rigorously extended to photoelectrosynthetic reactions, where, in addition to chemical substrates and charge carriers, light is a required reagent. In this perspective, we draw parallels between concepts involving enzyme catalytic efficiency, the benchmarking of molecular electrocatalysts, and the performance of photoelectrosynthetic assemblies, while highlighting key differences, assumptions, and limitations.

Storing sunlight at low temperatures?

Here, artificial leaves that convert sunlight to fuels could provide a sustainable energy future. But several challenges must be overcome to improve their economic viability. Publishing in Energy & Environmental Science, Kölbach, Rehfeld, and May describe the potential of decentralized hydrogen production using thermally integrated architectures that operate under sub-freezing temperatures.

Six–Electron Chemistry of a Binuclear Fe(III) Fused Porphyrin

Here in this special collection dedicated to Prof. Jean-Michel Savéant, we report on the synthesis and characterization of a novel binuclear Fe(III) fused porphyrin. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy confirms the extended electronic structure of this macrocycle. In addition, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicates the Fe centers experience a relatively rigid ligand environment as compared to a structurally related mononuclear complex featuring an 18 π-aromatic porphyrin ligand. X-ray photoelectron and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopies confirm the iron centers of both assemblies are Fe(III) in the as prepared, resting state. In comparison with the mononuclear porphyrin, electrochemical measurements show there is a doubling of the number of redox events associated with the fused, binuclear complex. In conclusion, key features of the fused-iron-porphyrin include: 1) bimetallic-iron sites, 2) a π-extended ligand capable of delocalizing electrons across the multimetallic scaffold, and 3) the ability to store up to six electrons.

Electron–Nuclear Dynamics Accompanying Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer

Although photoinduced proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) plays an essential role in photosynthesis, a full understanding of the mechanism is still lacking due to the complex nonequilibrium dynamics arising from the strongly coupled electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom. Here we report the photoinduced PCET dynamics of a biomimetic model system investigated by means of transient IR and two-dimensional electronic–vibrational (2DEV) spectroscopies, IR spectroelectrochemistry (IRSEC), and calculations utilizing long-range-corrected hybrid density functionals. This collective experimental and theoretical effort provides a nuanced picture of the complicated dynamics and synergistic motions involved in photoinduced PCET. In particular, the evolution of the 2DEV line shape, which is highly sensitive to the mixing of vibronic states, is interpreted by accurate computational modeling of the charge separated state and is shown to represent a gradual change in electron density distribution associated with a dihedral twist that occurs on a 120 fs time scale.
