Development of Material Studies at the LANL UCN Facility Focusing on Actinide Hydriding and Fission Damage

The aging of as-built actinide surfaces in static and dynamic environments is a complex problem of high importance to LANL’s core mission. Many standard material science tools used to study this problem are ideal for highly controlled, lab-made samples. The goal of this work is to use ultracold neutrons to bridge the gap between lab made and as-built surface aging studies. This capability is unique to LANL and will support our core mission.

Neutron Interferometric methods and quantum sensing

Advances in material science and engineering make it possible to access artificial materials or ‘metamaterial’ properties and structures on the length scale comparable to the wavelength of ultracold neutrons ~ 100 nm. Strong neutron scattering effects such as Anderson localization, resonance scattering may be studied in the laboratory according to our recent theoretical studies. UCN interferometry and high-resolution spectroscopy (sub-pico-electronvolt resolution) in neutronic metamaterials are examples of new experimental possibilities that can probe quantum gravitational states of neutrons, and quantum sensing based on ultracold neutrons.

Quasi 1-D Study of Pulse Detonation Rocket Engine Blowdown Gasdynamics and Performance

This viewgraph representation provides an overview of research which develops a quasi one dimensional chemistry computational fluid dynamics code to study the effect of nozzle design on the performance of pulse detonation rocket engines (PDREs). Topics considered include: PDREs vs. steady-state rocket engines (SSREs), PDRE cycles, numerical models of idealized PDRE performance, thrust determination of PDRE, specific geometries, and nozzle design and geometry.
