Quality Assurance Surveillance Tool Designed for SLS EM-1 Certificate of Flight Readiness

Exploration Mission-1 (EM-1) is an uncrewed mission that is launching on the Space Launch System (SLS) Block 1 vehicle. This is a critical flight test for the agency's human deep space exploration goals. Exploration Ground Systems (EGS) Quality (SA-F2) is responsible for providing Quality Assurance Surveillance Plans (QASPs) for NASA contracts and facilities. A QASP assures products and services are provided to EGS in accordance with the contract requirements. In order to encapsulate the multiple KSC Safety and Mission Assurance surveillance and audit activities that need to be accomplished specifically for EM-1 Certificate of Flight Reediness (CoFR), a QASP tool needed to be implemented. This tool would be able to intuitively track Work Authorization Documents (WADs) under development by Test Operations Support Contract (TOSC), reviewed and accepted WADs, Government Mandatory Inspection Points (GMIPs), Nonconformances (NCs), Material Review Board (MRB) Status, Corrective Actions, Alterations, Deviations, and Waivers for flight hardware and Ground Support Equipment (GSE). This would help ensure that all SLS EM-1 flight hardware and related GSE surveillances and requirements are being recognized and completed with zero constraints identified for the mission.

A New Look at Stellar Outflows: Spitzer Observations of the HH 46/47 System

We present the Early Release Observations of the HH 46/47 system and HH 46 IRS 1 source, taken with the three instruments aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The optically invisible southwest lobe, driven by the HH 47C bow shock, is revealed in full detail by the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) images and displays a 'loop'-like morphology. Both of the mid-infrared outflow lobes are narrower than those of CO flow. We believe that the combination of emission by H2 rotational lines [S(11)-S(4)] and some atomic lines, which fall within the IRAC passbands, are responsible for the bulk of the observed emission, although contributions from the 3.3, 6.2, and 7.7 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission bands cannot be ruled out. Weak spectral features corresponding to these emitters are present in the Infrared Spectrograph spectrum of the HH 47A bow shock. The spectrum of HH 46 IRS 1 shows remarkable similarities to those of high-mass protostars, which include the presence of H2O, CO2, CH4, and possibly NH3, CH3OH, and ices. The high ice abundances and the lack of signs of thermal processing indicate that these ices in the envelope are well shielded from the powerful outflow and its cavity. Emission from the Bok globule at 24 micron is detected and displays a similar structure to that observed at 8 micron.

The 'Baldwin Effect' in Wolf-Rayet stars

The equivalent widths of a number of emission lines in the spectra of WN-type Wolf-Rayet stars are found to inversely correlate with the luminosity of the underlying continuum. This is the well-known Baldwin Effect that has previously been observed in quasars and some Seyfert I galaxies. The Effect can be inferred from line and continuum predictions in published non-LTE model helium atmospheres and is explainable in terms of differences in wind density among WN stars. Using a simple wind model, we show that the Effect arises from the fact that both the effective radius for the local continuum and the emission measure of the layers above the continuum-forming region depend on the density in the wind. The Effect provides a new method for distance determinations of W-R stars.
