Driving on the surface of Mars with the rover sequencing and visualization program

Operating a rover on Mars is not possible using teleoperations due to the distance involved and the bandwith limitations. To operate these rovers requires sophisticated tools to make operators knowledgeable of the terrain, hazards, features of interest, and rover state and limitations, and to support building command sequences and rehearsing expected operations. This paper discusses how the Rover Sequencing and Visualization program and a small set of associated tools support this requirement.

Terrain Modelling for Immersive Visualization for the Mars Exploration Rovers

Immersive environments are being used to support mission operations at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This technology contributed to the Mars Pathfinder Mission in planning sorties for the Sojourner rover and is being used for the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) missions. The stereo imagery captured by the rovers is used to create 3D terrain models, which can be viewed from any angle, to provide a powerful and information rich immersive visualization experience. These technologies contributed heavily to both the mission success and the phenomenal level of public outreach achieved by Mars Pathfinder and MER. This paper will review the utilization of terrain modelling for immersive environments in support of MER.

The Athena SDM rover: A testbed for Mars rover mobility

In this paper we describe the software aspects of the overall Athena SDM rover mobility system in three parts: the control electronics, the software architecture and development environment, and surface navigation software. The Athena SDM architecture has been shown to be capable of meeting mission navigation requirements by being able to safely drive 100 meters using allowable resources within three hours.

Post-metamorphic fluid infiltration into granulites from the Adirondack Mountains, USA

Post-metamorphic effects in the anorthosites of the Adirondacks, New York were described. Calcite-chlorite-sericite assemblages occur as veins, in disseminated form and as clots, and document retrograde fluid infiltration. These features are associated with late-state CO2-rich fluid inclusions. Stable isotope analyses of calcites indicates that the retrograde fluids interacted with meta-igneous and supracrustal lithologies, but the precise timing of the retrogression is as yet unknown.

The AXAF CCD imaging spectrometer

The AXAF CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) is currently being defined as a possible focal plane instrument to be flown on the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF). The imaging spectrometer consists of an array of charge coupled devices (CCD's) to be placed at the focus of the AXAF mirrors. The array will provide high angular resolution (0.5 arc seconds), moderate spectral resolution (150 eV) over the energy range 0.1 to 10 keV, temporal resolution down to 60 microseconds, and single photon quantum detection efficiencies of up to 90 percent. X-ray sensitivity for a point source exceeds 10 to the -15th ergs/sq cm sec for a 10 to the 5th sec exposure. When used in conjunction with the objective gratings, the array will yield wavelength resolution of up to 200.
