Beta Backscatter Measures the Hardness of Rubber

Nondestructive testing method determines hardness, on Shore scale, of room-temperature-vulcanizing silicone rubber. Measures backscattered beta particles; backscattered radiation count directly proportional to Shore hardness. Test set calibrated with specimen, Shore hardness known from mechanical durometer test. Specimen of unknown hardness tested, and radiation count recorded. Count compared with known sample to find Shore hardness of unknown.

Detecting Cracks in Rough Metal Surfaces

Test based on eddy-current probe technique identifies cracks in swaged metals. Hinged collar with spring-loaded latch holds probe in place on part tested. For repeated measurements on same or similar parts, collar loosened and moved to various measuring positions. Method suitable for many kinds of metal parts, including swaged fittings, tubing, and pipes. Used for rapid crack/no-crack determinations in suspect parts already installed.

Membrane Switches Check Seal Pressure

Array of flexible membrane switches used to indicate closure of seal. Switch membrane responds to pressure exerted by rigid surface on compliant sealing medium and provides switch contacts monitored electronically. Membrane switches connected in series and placed under seal. When all switches are closed lamp or LED lights up, indicating requisite seal pressure has been realized at all switch positions. Principle used to ensure integrity of seals on refrigerator and oven doors, weatherstripping, hatches, spacecraft, airplanes, and submarines.
