No Large Brightness Variations on Nereid

Observations of Nereid with the 200-in. telescope on Palomar Mountain over three contiguous nights in July 1995 show no evidence for the large photometric variations seen by earlier observers. Total brightness variations within a single night are less than 10%. Our results suggest that Nereid may have a long rotational period, perhaps on the order of weeks. Our observations were not obtained close enough to Nereid's apoapsis to determine whether its rotation state is chaotic, as suggested by Dobrovoiskis.

CCD photometry of the Uranian satellites

Broadband V and R CCD observations of the Uranian satellite system have been obtained over the full range of solar phase angles observable from earth. These first visual observations of the phase curves of Miranda, Ariel, and Umbriel show that Ariel and Miranda exhibit the large opposition surges previously seen on the two outer Uranian Satellites. Umbriel, however, lacks an appreciable opposition surge; its surface is either extremely compact or consists of small particles which lack a backscattered component. The tenuous structure of the other satellites is most likely due to the effects of eons of meteoritic gardening.

Comparative global albedo and color maps of the Uranian satellites

The surfaces of the Uranian satellites Ariel, Miranda, Oberon, Titania, and Umbriel are characterized on the basis of Voyager observations. Tables of spectrophotometric data and maps of normal reflectances, green/violet ratios, and possible geological formations are presented and discussed in detail. Variations in albedo are found to be associated with impact features, and it is inferred from color differences that the upper surface of Ariel contains a higher proportion of redder material (tentatively identified as accreted low-albedo meteoritic dust) than those of the other moons.

Albedo and color maps of the Saturnian satellites

The paper discusses the production of maps of the albedos and colors of Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, and Rhea over the full range of their imaged surfaces. Voyager images were used to prepare maps of the normal reflectances and color ratios (0.58/0.41 micron) of these satelites.
