SEASAT demonstration experiments with the offshore oil, gas and mining industries

Despite its failure, SEASAT-1 acquired a reasonable volume of data that can be used by industrial participants on a non-real-time basis to prove the concept of microwave sensing of the world's oceans from a satellite platform. The amended version of 8 experimental plans are presented, along with a description of the satellite, its instruments, and the data available. Case studies are summarized for the following experiments: (1) Beaufort Sea oil, gas, and Arctic operations; (2) Labrador Sea oil, gas, and sea ice; (3) Gulf of Mexico pipelines; (4) U.S. East Coast offshore oil and gas; (5) worldwide offshore drilling and production operations; (6) Equatorial East Pacific Ocean mining; (7) Bering Sea ice project; and (8) North Sea oil and gas.

Preliminary assessment of industrial needs for an advanced ocean technology

A quick-look review of selected ocean industries is presented for the purpose of providing NASA OSTA with an assessment of technology needs and market potential. The size and growth potential, needs and problem areas, technology presently used and its suppliers, are given for industries involved in deep ocean mining, petrochemicals ocean energy conversion. Supporting services such as ocean bottom surveying; underwater transportation, data collection, and work systems; and inspection and diving services are included. Examples of key problem areas that are amenable to advanced technology solutions are included. Major companies are listed.

Detailed gravity anomalies from Geos 3 satellite altimetry data

Detailed gravity anomalies are computed from a combination of Geos 3 satellite altimeter and terrestrial gravity data using least-squares principles. The mathematical model used is based on the Stokes' equation modified for a nonglobal solution. Using Geos 3 data in the calibration area, the effects of several anomaly parameter configurations and data densities/distributions on the anomalies and their accuracy estimates are studied. The accuracy estimates for 1 deg x 1 deg mean anomalies from low density altimetry data are of the order of 4 mgal. Comparison of these anomalies with the terrestrial data and also with Rapp's data derived using collocation techniques show rms differences of 7.2 and 4.9 mgal, respectively. Indications are that the anomaly accuracies can be improved to about 2 mgal with high density data. Estimation of 30 in. x 30 in. mean anomalies indicates accuracies of the order of 5 mgal. Proper verification of these results will be possible only when accurate ground truth data become available.

Satellite interferometer as an advanced navigation/communication system

An orthogonal system of interferometry baselines aboard a geostationary satellite is proposed to be used for navigation, surveillance, and traffic control. Position determination is based on the relationship between the measured phase differences, the known and unknown transmitter locations, and other systematic error model parameters using a generalized least-squares estimation procedure. It is shown that position accuracy is critically dependent on the baseline length and on the magnitude of the random component of the measuring errors. Several trade-offs with respect to the system accuracies, the number of users, data rates, hardware costs, etc., are examined. Simultaneous use of the same channels for navigation and data transfer is found feasible and five candidate or 'strawman' interferometer system proposals are presented. It is concluded that the system's performance is excellent in comparison with present or planned systems, and that it is viable in meeting potential user's requirements.

Detailed gravity anomalies from GEOS-3 satellite altimetry data

A technique for deriving mean gravity anomalies from dense altimetry data was developed. A combination of both deterministic and statistical techniques was used. The basic mathematical model was based on the Stokes' equation which describes the analytical relationship between mean gravity anomalies and geoid undulations at a point; this undulation is a linear function of the altimetry data at that point. The overdetermined problem resulting from the excessive altimetry data available was solved using Least-Squares principles. These principles enable the simultaneous estimation of the associated standard deviations reflecting the internal consistency based on the accuracy estimates provided for the altimetry data as well as for the terrestrial anomaly data. Several test computations were made of the anomalies and their accuracy estimates using GOES-3 data.

Improved ground truth geoid for the GEOS-3 calibration area

The purpose of this investigation is to develop methods and procedures are reported for computing a detailed geoid to be used as geodetic ground truth for the calibration and verification of GEOS-3 altimeter data. The technique developed is based on rectifying the best available detailed geoid so that the rectified geoid will have correct scale, orientation, shape and position with respect to the geocenter. The approach involved the development of a mathematical model based on a second degree polynomial, in rectangular Cartesian coordinates, describing the geoid undulations at the control stations. A generalized least squares solution was obtained for the polynomial which describes the variation of the undulation differences between the control stations geoid and the gravimetric geoid. Three rectified geoid were determined. These geoids correspond to three sets of tracking station data: (1) WFC/C-band data; (2) GSFC/C-band data; and (3) OSU-275 data. The absolute accuracy of these rectified geoids is linearly correlated with the uncertainties of the tracking station coordinates and, to a certain extent, with those of the detailed geoid being rectified.

Geodetic measurements on the ocean

This paper covers the topic of marine geodesy, its goals, and applications. Specifically discussed are position determination and establishment of geodetic control on the ocean bottom, ocean surface, and subsurface, and the determination of the geoid, a vertical reference surface. The various techniques used in position determination (including satellite, airborne, radio, inertial and acoustic techniques) are assessed in terms of accuracy, coverage, and contribution to the solution of specific problems associated with position and control. The results of several marine geodetic control experiments are presented. Classical techniques for the determination of the geoid are discussed and assessed, as are new techniques such as satellite altimetry. The outlook for marine geodetic measurements in the ocean is outlined in terms of what is being planned or considered for the next decade, and several recommendations are made.

Applications of Seasat to the offshore oil, gas and mining industries

The NASA satellite Seasat-A (to be launched in 1978) has applications to the offshore oil, gas, and mining industries including: (1) improvements in weather and wave forecasting, (2) studies of past wind and wave statistics for planning design requirements, and (3) monitoring ice formation, breakup, and movement in arctic regions. The primary geographic areas which will be monitored by Seasat-A include: the Beaufort Sea, the Labrador Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. east coast, West Africa, Equatorial East Pacific, the Gulf of Alaska, and the North Sea. Seasat-A instrumentation used in ocean monitoring consists of a radar altimeter, a radar scatterometer, a synthetic aperture radar, a microwave radiometer, and a visible and infrared radiometer. The future outlook of the Seasat program is planned in three phases: measurement feasibility demonstration (1978-1980), data accessibility/utility demonstration (1980-1983), and operational system demonstration (1983-1985).

Feasibility of satellite interferometry for surveillance, navigation, and traffic control

The feasibility of using a satellite borne interferometry system for surveillance, navigation, and traffic control applications was investigated. The evaluation was comprised of: (1) a two part systems analysis (software and hardware); (2) a survey of competitive navigation systems (both experimental and planned); (3) a comparison of their characteristics and capabilities with those of an interferometry system; and (4) a limited survey of potential users to determine the variety of possible applications for the interferometry system and the requirements which it would have to meet. Five candidate or "strawman" interferometry systems for various applications with various capabilities were configured (on a preliminary basis) and were evaluated. It is concluded that interferometry in conjunction with a geostationary satellite has an inherent ability to provide both a means for navigation/position location and communication. It offers a very high potential for meeting a large number of user applications and requirements for navigation and related functions.

Calibration and evaluation of Skylab altimetry for geodetic determination of the geoid

The author has identified the following significant results. The Skylab altimeter experiment has proven the capability of the altimeter for measurement of sea surface topography. The geometric determination of the geoid/mean sea level from satellite altimetry is a new approach having significant applications in many disciplines including geodesy and oceanography. A generalized least squares collocation technique was developed for determination of the geoid from altimetry data. The technique solves for the altimetry geoid and determines one bias term for the combined effect of sea state, orbit, tides, geoid, and instrument error using sparse ground truth data. The influence of errors in orbit and a priori geoid values are discussed. Although the Skylab altimeter instrument accuracy is about plus or minus 1m, significant results were obtained in identification of large geoidal features such as over the Puerto Rico trench. Comparison of the results of several passes shows that good agreement exists between the general slopes of the altimeter geoid and the ground truth, and that the altimeter appears to be capable of providing more details than are now available with best known geoids.

The application of Skylab altimetry to marine geoid determination

The author had identified the following significant results. The major results can be divided broadly into two groups. One group is concerned with the effects of errors inherent in the various input data, such as the orbit emphemeris, a priori geoid etc. The other consists of the results of the actual analysis of the data from the Skylab EREP passes 4, 6, 7, and 9. Results from the first group were obtained from the analysis of some preliminary data from EREP pass 9 mode 5. The second group of results consists of a set of recovered bias terms for each of the submodes of observations and a set of nine altimetry geoid profiles corresponding to the various passes and modes. Along with each of these profiles, the a priori geoid, gravity anomaly, and the bathymetric data profiles are also presented for easy comparison.

Applications of satellite and marine geodesy to operations in the ocean environment

The requirements for marine and satellite geodesy technology are assessed with emphasis on the development of marine geodesy. Various programs and missions for identification of the satellite geodesy technology applicable to marine geodesy are analyzed along with national and international marine programs to identify the roles of satellite/marine geodesy techniques for meeting the objectives of the programs and other objectives of national interest effectively. The case for marine geodesy is developed based on the extraction of requirements documented by authoritative technical industrial people, professional geodesists, government agency personnel, and applicable technology reports.

Marine geodetic control for geoidal profile mapping across the Puerto Rican Trench

A marine geodetic control was established for the northern end of the geoidal profile mapping experiment across the Puerto Rican Trench by determining the three-dimensional geodetic coordinates of the four ocean-bottom mounted acoustic transponders. The data reduction techniques employed and analytical processes involved are described. Before applying the analytical techniques to the field data, they were tested with simulated data and proven to be effective in theory as well as in practice.
