The objectives of the operational demonstration are to verify that the anticipated benefits of the higher carrier frequency can actually be realized under realistic operating conditions, and if possible to provide a significant enhancement to scientific data return.
The Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) has adopted three Recommendations dealing with telemetry for conventional missions: Packet Telemetry, Telemetry Channel Coding and Time Code Formats. The currently flying JPL spacecraft were designed prior to the adoption of these Recommendations. Future JPL missions will be compatible, as will the Deep Space Network and Space Flight Operations Center. This paper discusses ways in which application of the Recommendations causes or allows functions to be done differently from previous JPL projects, including the impact on timing and on telemetry adaptability.
A recursive algorithm is described which detects and characterizes point sources and extended sources in the data obtained from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) in the presence of non-stationary noise. The analysis of tests using simulated data indicates that the performance of the point source detector is very close to that expected from a matched filter with stationary gaussian noise. The false alarm rate of the extended source detector tends to be higher than expected at a given SNR.
The version of tutorial input implemented on the Modcomp used for antenna control at DSS 13 is described. Emphasis is on the use of the tutorial input; program operation is described to the extent that it makes the use more understandable. Flow charts are provided.
