Liquid-solid equilibria involving spinel, ilmenite, and ferropseudobrookite in the system 'FeO'-Al2O3-TiO2 in contact with metallic iron

Phase relations in the liquidus temperature region of the system 'FeO'-Al2O3-TiO2 in contact with metallic iron, at a total pressure below 1 atm, have been determined by the quenching technique. Four invariant points have been located, with phase assemblages and temperatures as follows; wuestite, ulvoespinel, nercynite and liquid, 1306 C; ulvoespinel, ilmenite, ferropseudobrookite and liquid, 1340 C; ulvoespinel, hercynite, ferropseudobrookite and liquid, 1367 C; hercynite, ferropseudobrookite, corundum and liquid, 1465 C. The data obtained confirm the presence of a miscibility gap between titanate and aluminate spinels, and provide quantitative data for the effect of Al2O3 on mutual stability relations among spinel, ilmenite, and ferropseudobrookite phases in the presence of liquid at high temperatures and strongly reducing conditions. It is shown that Al2O3 has a strong stabilizing effect on the phase assemblage ferropseudobrookite and spinel relative to ilmenite.

Equilibria bearing on the behavior of titanate phases during crystallization of iron silicate melts under strongly reducing conditions

Titanate phase relations at liquidus temperatures are determined for the CaAl2Si2O8-Fe2TiO4-FeTi2O5 system in contact with metallic iron by reflected- and transmitted-light microscopy, electron microprobe, and X-ray diffraction analyses. Results of critical equilibration runs are presented, various primary phase areas and liquidus isotherms are illustrated, and the geometry of the system is described. Three piercing points are determined, and it is noted that the compositional interrelations among coexisting crystalline and liquid phases as well as the sequence of the various titanate phases are indicative of the significant effects of the various cations on the relative stability of these phases. It is found that Al2O3 exerts a strong stabilizing effect on the phase assemblage of ulvospinel plus ferropseudobrookite relative to ilemite.

Equilibrium studies with a bearing on lunar rocks.

Review of the results of equilibrium studies of lunar rocks and of synthesized oxide and silicate phases performed in the temperature range from 1000 to 1400 C under strongly reducing conditions of a total pressure of 1 atm. Determined liquidus and solidus temperatures and sequence of appearance of crystalline phases are presented. The studies of synthesized mixtures are concentrated in two main areas, one dealing with subsolidus relations in titanate and spinel phases, the other with liquidus phase relations in simplified iron silicate systems.
