Structural Impact of Grid-Forming Inverters on Power System Coherency

This paper addresses the following fundamental research question: how does the integration of grid-forming inverters (GFMs) replacing conventional synchronous generators (SGs) impact the slow coherent eigen-structure and the low frequency oscillatory behavior of future power systems? Due to time-scale separated dynamics, generator states inside a coherent area synchronize over a fast time-scale due to stronger coupling, while the areas themselves synchronize over a slower time scale. Our mathematical analysis shows that due to the large-scale integration of GFMs, the weighted Laplacian structure of the frequency dynamics is preserved, however, the entries of the Laplacian may be significantly modified based on the location and penetration levels of the GFMs. This can impact and potentially significantly alter the coherency structure of the system. We have validated our findings with numerical results using the IEEE 68-bus test system.

Deep Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for Real-World Signalized Traffic Corridor Control

Signalized traffic control problem has been addressed recently with deep Reinforcement Learning (RL) approaches involving diverse state, action, and reward structures. While significant progress has been noted in the literature, open challenges still remain in the areas of adaptive signal phase timing, coordination in a multi-intersection corridor setting, and consideration of real-world traffic conditions. In the context of deep RL-based problem framing, extensions are needed that enable adaptive signal phase timings in an intersection agent's action space, computationally efficient information sharing among neighboring signalized intersection agents along a corridor, and experimentation in realistic simulation environments. In this paper, we develop a deep Advantage Actor Critic (A2C) multi-agent RL (MARL) approach capturing the research extensions above and apply it within a real-world calibrated Aimsun Next traffic corridor simulation model based on traffic data from the City of Coral Gables, Florida. For a multi-intersection corridor control setting, our numerical simulation experiments with a decentralized A2C MARL algorithm applied at different time periods led to a total average corridor travel delay reduction (expressed in seconds/mile averaged over vehicles) from 4.9% to 19.9% compared to state-of-the-art actuated control.

Advanced Computational Techniques for Improving Resilience of Critical Energy Infrastructure under Cyber-Physical Attacks

In this chapter, we present recent advances in improving the resilience of cyber-physical systems, especially with regards to energy systems. We provide discussions around various types of cyber-physical events that can cause disruptions and new advances in optimization, control, and reinforcement learning (RL) to deal with the challenges posed by such cyber-physical events. The presented methods range from distributed robust optimization, autonomous and coordinated control, reinforcement learning based resilient control and topology reconfiguration in Inter-System resilient control.
