Inter-Area Oscillation Damping with Type-5 Wind Power Plant: Preprint

This paper investigates the potential of using brushless excitation (BLE) for not only riding through the fault but also to damp inter-area power oscillation with the help of a synchronous generator (SG) used in Type 5 Wind Power Plant (WPP). In BLE, an auxiliary synchronous generator (ASG) behaving like an exciter is coupled and driven by the rotor of the main SG. The BLE's field current's ASG is fed by two separate loops of the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and Power System Stabilizer (PSS). The AVR system implements a control loop to regulate the generator terminal voltage, VT. For the PSS, the kinetic energy of the wind turbine is utilized according to the estimated rotational speed of the synchronous generator shaft of the SG. It mitigates the necessity of any curtailment of active power for damping. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified with a three-phase short circuit fault in a two-area power system.

Reduced Switching Frequency Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) for DFIG

An enhanced Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) strategy with a two-step prediction horizon for a Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) is the focus of this paper. The DFIG and RL filter's discrete-time model is used in the proposed control scheme for a two-step prediction horizon of rotor and filter currents for the converter's eight possible switching states. Afterward, the control algorithm selects the ideal switching state, which minimizes currents' objective function. The proposed control scheme does not require a modulation stage for internal controllers. We use Lagrange extrapolations to predict the dynamic changes in currents. The switching frequency reduction is achieved by integrating an optimization constraint in the algorithm's cost function. Furthermore, the Total Harmonic Distortion level of currents is kept below 5%, according to IEEE Std 519-14. Obtained results reveal that the switching frequency of the DFIG converters is considerably reduced without losing control; it is reduced by 13.89KHz for the Grid Side Converter (GSC) and by 1.78KHz for the Rotor Side Converter (RSC).

Investigating the Impact of Power-Take-Off System Parameters and Control Law on a Rotational Wave Energy Converter’s Peak-to-Average Power Ratio Reduction

Due to the irregular nature of real waves, the power captured in a wave energy converter (WEC) system is highly variable. This is an important barrier to the effective use of WECs. To address this challenge, this study focuses on a rotational WEC power-take-off system in which high-speed and high-efficiency generators along with a torque/power smoothing inertia element can be effectively utilized. In the first phase of this study, the U.S. Department of Energy’s reference model 3 (WEC-Sim RM3; two-body point absorber), along with a slider-crank WEC, were integrated for linear to rotational conversion. Relative motion between the float and spar in RM3 was the driving force for this slider-crank WEC, which is connected to a motor/generator set through a gearbox. RM3 geometry was scaled down by 25 times to work within the limits of the physical motor/generator set used in the experimentation. Once the integration in a hardware-in-the-loop simulation environment was successfully completed, data on the peak-to-average power ratio was collected for various wave conditions including regular and irregular waves. The control algorithm designed to keep the system in resonance with waves was able to maintain relatively high speed depending on the specific gear ratio and wave period. Initial results with hardware-in-the-loop simulations reveal that gear ratio and crank radius have a strong impact on the peak-to-average power ratio. In addition, it was found that output power from the generator was maximized at a larger gear ratio, as the crank radius was increased.

A Comprehensive Review of Permanent Magnet Transverse Flux Machines: Use in Direct-Drive Applications

The use of direct-drive machines in renewable and industrial applications is increasing at a rapid rate. Transverse flux machines (TFMs) are ideally suited for direct-drive applications due to their high torque density. This article presents a comprehensive review of permanent magnet (PM) TFMs for direct-drive applications. It introduces TFMs and their operating principle and reviews the different types of TFMs proposed in the literature. TFMs are categorized by the number of stator sides, types of stator cores, and magnet arrangement in the rotor. The review covers different design topologies, materials used for manufacturing, structural and thermal analyses, modeling, design optimization, and cogging torque minimization in TFMs. The article also examines various applications and comparisons for TFMs presented in the literature.

Design of BLDC Motor Diagnostic Device Based on Surge Test for Phase to Ground Fault

BLDC motor is essential in the industrial world, especially it been used for an electric vehicle. The benefit of using BLDC motor is that it has high rate efficiency and low mechanical losses. However, to know the isolation condition of winding and increase reliability, it needs to be tested. With the implementation of surge test based fault detection device of BLDC motor, the condition of BLDC motor can be monitored and maintained according to analysis of its condition. The surge test method used because it is sensitive in detecting the initial damage in the isolation failure process on stator winding. A surge voltage is generated from the Cockroft-Walton and switching circuit with capacitors. The result is analyzed using Error Area Ratio (EAR). The test result shows that the higher the value of resistance and inductance, the smaller the frequency of the surge wave. When the BLDC motor in a parallel short circuit condition, the threshold value of the EAR test-reff has a minimum value of 5.28%, an average of 13.52%, and a maximum of 28.55%.
