A pioneer-class Mars aeronomy mission

Preliminary studies of a Pioneer-class Mars-orbiter aeronomy mission are reviewed. The aeronomy objectives and payload are discussed, along with the mission requirements, spacecraft design requirements, possible spacecraft designs, and total mission costs. It is shown that existing earth-orbiting communication satellites can be easily modified for the aeronomy mission and that the total mission cost should be between $150 million and $185 million in 1982 dollars.

Airborne pressure and temperature measurements during the 1977 intertropical convergence zone experiment

During the 1977 ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone) experiment in Panama two aircraft and numerous balloon-borne radiosonde instruments were equipped to measure pressure and temperature. The experiment was a coordinated effort to evaluate the meteorological conditions that prevailed from July 17 through 31, 1977. A critical analysis of the data collected on one of the aircraft (the Lear jet) operating at altitudes to 13,000 m for about 2 hr each day during most days of the experiment is presented. The discussion includes a comparison of the vertical profiles of potential temperature obtained from the Learjet with those obtained from balloons launched at Ft. Sherman. Time histories of pressure, temperature, and potential temperature, as observed from the Learjet are also presented.

Airborne laser Doppler velocimeter

A CO2 laser Doppler detection system has been developed to measure remotely the true airspeed of an aircraft. The system uses a 50-W sealed-off CO2 laser in a homodyne detection system employing a collinear optical telescope, a HgCdTe detector, and a frequency tracking loop. The system was successfully flight-tested on a NASA Convair 990 research aircraft during December 1971 and June 1972. The results indicate that an airspeed measurement under clear weather conditions is feasible up to an altitude of 3000 m with an error of less than 0.5%.-

Continuous Fourier transform method and apparatus

An input analog signal to be frequency analyzed is separated into N number of simultaneous analog signal components each identical to the original but delayed relative to the original by a successively larger time delay. The separated and delayed analog components are combined together in a suitable number of adders and attenuators in accordance with at least one component product of the continuous Fourier transform and analog signal matrices to separate the analog input signal into at least one of its continuous analog frequency components of bandwidth 1/N times the bandwidth of the original input signal. The original analog input signal can be reconstituted by combining the separate analog frequency components in accordance with the component products of the continuous Fourier transform and analog frequency component matrices. The continuous Fourier transformation is useful for spectrum analysis, filtering, transfer function synthesis, and communications.

Continuous Fourier transform system

Complex digital computer is not required, only summing amplifiers and attenuators are used for transformation of signal. Continuous transform system may be used for spectrum analysis, filtering, transfer function synthesis, and communications.

Assess program: Interactive data management systems for airborne research

Two data systems were developed for use in airborne research. Both have distributed intelligence and are programmed for interactive support among computers and with human operators. The C-141 system (ADAMS) performs flight planning and telescope control functions in addition to its primary role of data acquisition; the CV-990 system (ADDAS) performs data management functions in support of many research experiments operating concurrently. Each system is arranged for maximum reliability in the first priority function, precision data acquisition.

Graphical method for analyzing digital computer efficiency

Analysis method utilizes graph-theoretic approach for evaluating computation cost and makes logical distinction between linear graph of a computation and linear graph of a program. It applies equally well to other processes which depend on quatitative edge nomenclature and precedence relationships between edges.

A topological approach to computer-aided sensitivity analysis

Sensitivities of any arbitrary system are calculated using general purpose digital computer with available software packages for transfer function analysis. Sensitivity shows how element variation within system affects system performance. Signal flow graph illustrates topological system behavior and relationship among parameters in system.

Digital filter synthesis computer program

Digital filter synthesis computer program expresses any continuous function of a complex variable in approximate form as a computational algorithm or difference equation. Once the difference equation has been developed, digital filtering can be performed by the program on any input data list.
