Iterative wavefront optimization of ultrafast laser beams carrying orbital angular momentum

Structured intense laser beams offer degrees of freedom that are highly attractive for high-field science applications. However, the performance of high-power laser beams in these applications is often hindered by deviations from the desired spatiotemporal profile. This study reports the wavefront optimization of ultrafast Laguerre-Gaussian beams through the synergy of adaptive optics and genetic algorithm-guided feedback. The results indicate that the intensity fluctuations along the perimeter of the target ring-shaped profile can be reduced up to ~15%. Furthermore, the radius of the ring beam profile can be tailored to a certain extent by establishing threshold fitting criteria. The versatility of this approach is experimentally demonstrated in conjunction with different focusing geometries.

U.S. liquid propulsion technology stands still

NASA is currently conducting a comprehensive reevaluation of such fundamental launch vehicle-related issues as the appropriate balance between manned and unmanned launchers, reusable vs expendable vehicles and vehicle components, and the evolutionary vs innovative new-system development courses. Two trends have emerged, both emphasizing system expense: (1) low cost/manned flight vehicles for personnel transfer, small payloads, servicing, rescue, and Space Station logistics, and (2) low cost/unit mass vehicles for large and multiple payloads, propellants, bulk cargoes, and heavy upper stages. Attention is given to the contributions made by CFD to liquid-fueled engine component design.

An assessment of liquid propulsion in the United States

The paper examines the status of liquid propulsion capability and technology in the U.S. today versus where it needs to be to satisfy proposed near and long term goals. Attention is given to four areas of liquid propulsion: earth-to-orbit propulsion, orbital transfer propulsion, on-orbit and planetary propulsion, and advanced propulsion. Recommendations on improving the state of liquid propulsion in the U.S. are presented.

Evaluating LANDSAT-4 MSS and TM data

Interband line pixel misregistrations were determined for the four MSS bands of the Mistassini, Ontario scene and multitemporal registration of LANDSAT-4 products were tested for two different geocoded scenes. Line and pixel misregistrations are tabulated as determined by the manual ground control points and the digital band to band correlation techniques. A method was developed for determining the spectral information content of TM images for forestry applications.
