High-Temperature Microphone With Fiber-Optic Output

Acoustic-pressure transducer (microphone) with fiber-optic output designed to withstand hot, loud, structurally vibrating environment like that of jet engine. Features flat frequency response out to frequencies well beyond several-kilohertz range needed to test for acoustic-pressure loads on engine structures.

Advances in sapphire optical fiber sensors

We describe the development and testing of two sapphire fiber sensor designs intended for use in high temperature environments. The first is a birefringence-balanced polarimetric sapphire fiber sensor. In this sensor, two single crystal sapphire rods, acting as the birefringence sensing element, are connected to each other in such a way that the slow axis of the first rod is aligned along with the fast axis of the second rod, and the fast axis of the first rod is along the slow axis of the second rod. This sensor has been demonstrated for measurement of temperature up to 1500 C. The second is a sapphire-fiber-based intrinsic interferometric sensor. In this sensor, a length of uncoated, unclad, structural-graded multimode sapphire fiber is fusion spliced to a singlemode silica fiber to form a Fabry-Perot cavity. The reflections from the silica-to-sapphire fiber splice and the free endface of the sapphire fiber give rise to the interfering fringe output. This sensor has been demonstrated for the measurement of temperature above 1510 C, and a resolution of 0.1 C has been obtained.

Quantitative measurement of in-plane acoustic field components using surface-mounted fiber sensors

Extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensors have been used to obtain calibrated, quantitative measurements of the in-plane displacement components associated with the propagation of ultrasonic elastic stress waves on the surfaces of solids. The frequency response of the sensor is determined by the internal spacing between the two reflecting fiber endface surfaces which form the Fabry-Perot cavity, a distance which is easily controlled during fabrication. With knowledge of the material properties of the solid, the out-of-plane displacement component of the wave may also be determined, giving full field data.

An interferometer having fused optical fibers, and apparatus and method using the interferometer

An interferometer includes a first optical fiber coupled to a second optical fiber by fusing. At a fused portion, the first and second optical fibers are cut to expose respective cores. The cut or fused end of the first and second optical fibers is arranged to oppose a diaphragm or surface against which a physical phenomenon such as pressure or stress, is applied. In a first embodiment, a source light which is generally single-mode monochromatic, coherent light, is input to the first optical fiber and by evanescence, effectively crosses to the second optical fiber at the fused portion. Source light from the second optical fiber is reflected by the diaphragm or surface, and received at the second optical fiber to generate an output light which has an intensity which depends upon interference of reference light based on the source light, and the reflected light reflected from the diaphragm or surface. The intensity of the output light represents a positional relationship or displacement between the interferometer and the diaphragm or surface.

Birefringence-balanced polarimetric optical fiber sensor for high-temperature measurements

A birefringence-balanced polarimetric multimode fiber temperature sensor is proposed and demonstrated. Two single-crystal sapphire rods are incorporated into the sensor head. They are connected end to end in such a way that the slow axis of the first rod is aligned with the fast axis of the second rod, referred to as the referencing rod. Since the lengths of the two rods are chosen to be almost the same, the original birefringence of the first rod is balanced by that of the second rod. A light-emitting diode serves as the light source. This sensor has been experimentally demonstrated for high-temperature measurements as high as 1500 C. A sensitivity of 5 C has been obtained.

Sapphire-fiber-based intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer

A sapphire optical fiber intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric sensor is demonstrated. A length of multimode sapphire fiber that functions as a Fabry-Perot cavity is spliced to a silica single-mode fiber. The interferometric signals of this sensor are produced by the interference between the reflection from the silica-sapphire fiber splice and the reflection from the free end face of the sapphire fiber. This sensor has been demonstrated for temperature measurement. A resolution of 0.2 C has been obtained over a measurement range of 310 C to 976 C.

Sapphire fiber interferometer for microdisplacement measurements at high temperature

Attention is given to the use of a short-length multimode sapphire rod as an extension to a conventional Michelson interferometric configuration, but with operation of Fabry-Perot cavity-based sensor element type. The performance of such a device as an interferometric sensor is demonstrated for a case where the interference between the reflections from the sapphire-air interface and an air-metallic surface is inspected for microdisplacements of the metallic surface. A detailed account is given of the sensor's fabrication procedure; results are presented for the detection of surface-acoustic waves.

Two-mode elliptical-core weighted fiber sensors for vibration analysis

Two-mode, elliptical-core optical fibers are demonstrated in weighted, distributed and selective vibration-mode-filtering applications. We show how appropriate placement of optical fibers on a vibrating structure can lead to vibration mode filtering. Selective vibration-mode suppression on the order of 10 dB has been obtained using tapered two-mode, circular-core fibers with tapering functions that match the second derivatives of the modes of vibration to be enhanced. We also demonstrate the use of chirped, two-mode gratings in fibers as spatial modal sensors that are equivalents of shaped piezoelectric sensors.

Miniaturized fiber-optic Michelson-type interferometric sensors

A novel, miniaturized Michelson-type fiber-optic interferometric sensor that is relatively insensitive to temperature drifts is presented. A fused-biconical tapered coupler is cleaved immediately after the coupled length and polished down to the region of the fused cladding, but short of the interaction region. The end of one core is selectively coated with a reflective surface and is used as the reference arm; the other core serves as the sensing arm. The detection of surface acoustic waves, microdisplacements, and magnetic fields is reported. The sensor is shown to be highly stable in comparison to a classic homodyne, uncompensated Michelson interferometer, and signal-to-noise ratios of 65 dB have been obtained.

Elliptical-core two mode fiber sensors and devices incorporating photoinduced refractive index gratings

Results of experiments performed using germanium-doped, elliptical core, two-mode optical fibers whose sensitivity to strain was spatially varied through the use of chirped, refractive-index gratings permanently induced into the core using Argon-ion laser light are presented. This type of distributed sensor falls into the class of eighted-fiber sensors which, through a variety of means, weight the strain sensitivity of a fiber according to a specified spatial profile. We describe results of a weighted-fiber vibration mode filter which successfully enhances the particular vibration mode whose spatial profile corresponds to the profile of the grating chirp. We report on the high temperature survivability of such grating-based sensors and discuss the possibility of multiplexing more than one sensor within a single fiber.

Sapphire fiber interferometer for microdisplacement measurements at high temperatures

We report the use of a short-length, multimode sapphire rod as an extension to a Michelson configuration, but operated as a low-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity. We demonstrate the performance of such a device as an interferometric sensor, where the interference between the reflections from the sapphire-air interface and an air-metallic surface is observed for microdisplacement of the metallic surface which is placed close to the sapphire endface. We describe in detail the fabrication procedure and present results obtained from the detection of temperature changes, applied strain, and surface acoustic waves.

Elliptical-core two-mode optical-fiber sensor implementation methods

We present experimental methods for the practical implementation of few-mode elliptical-core sensors. Techniques for desensitizing the lead-in and lead-out fibers are discussed and results of a vibration sensor embedded in a graphite-epoxy composite are presented. A scheme using a single-mode elliptical-core fiber as the lead-in fiber and an offset circular-core single-mode fiber as the lead-out fiber is successfully implemented. Detection techniques for few-mode fiber sensors are reviewed and a novel fringe-counting method to unambiguously detect the amplitude and direction of dynamic strain is reported for the first time.
