An Iron-Based Dehydration Catalyst for Selective Formation of Styrene

In this work, we report the synthesis and crystal structure of [Fe(OTf) 2 (FOX)] (A). This robust iron(II) complex was successfully applied as a homogeneous catalyst for the dehydration of 1-phenylethanol to styrene. Even at low catalyst loadings and moderate reaction temperatures, A showed a high catalytic efficiency. It was found to selectively activate the benzylic alcohol group of 1-phenylethanol. This is challenging since the vinyl system of styrene is highly reactive. In contrast to most of the other dehydration processes, the use of a Brønsted acid was not necessary. Furthermore, mechanistic insights into this E 1 -type transformation and its competing S N 1-type side reactions are reported. [Fe( c HexOH)(OTf)(FOX)][OTf] (B), an alcohol adduct of A, [Fe(H 2 O) 2 (FOX)][OTf] 2 (C), the completely hydrated derivative of A, and [μ-O{Fe(OTf)(FOX)} 2 ][OTf] 2 (D), a dinuclear oxidation product of A, were also characterized and are discussed.

First-Row Transition Metals Complexes with Fused Oxazolidine (FOX) Ligands

In this comprehensive study, we report the syntheses and crystal structures of 6 fused oxazolidine (FOX) bicycles and 22 complexes with FOX ligands. The structures are compared to the few FOX complexes found in literature. For our investigations, we developed synthetic strategies to selectively synthesize chiral or achiral FOX bicycles with pyridyl substituents. The coordination chemistry of the chiral and achiral FOX compounds with first-row transition metals is discussed in an indepth analysis of the crystal structures. We found that the binding modes of the ligands are dependent on the configuration of the FOX backbone and on the steric demand of the substituents which were introduced to the pyridyl groups. Here, the configuration of the FOX ligands is retained during the coordination of metal(II) ions such as Mn 2+ , Fe 2+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ . Reactions of these metal ions with chiral FOX ligands lead to the formation of chiral complexes. In contrast, stronger Lewis acidic metal(III) ions, such as Fe 3+ or Al 3+ , induce an isomerization of the chiral FOX ligands to their achiral diastereomers.

Development of sterically hindered siloxide-functionalized polyoxotungstates for the complexation of 5d-metals

In this study, we extend the family of organosilyl-functionalized trivacant Keggin polyoxotungstates, [PW 9 O 34 (RSiOH) 3 ] 3− (R = n Pr, i Pr, t Bu), through the introduction of bulky aryl and aliphatic silanol substituents, namely phenyl, cyclohexyl and biphenyl. This work was performed in order to study the impact of these large functional groups on the accessibility of the well-defined tridentate coordination site. Coordination of hafnium to these type II hybrid polyoxotungstates was conducted in order to study the ability of the bulkier ligand pockets to support larger cations in comparison to those previously reported (e.g. Ti 4+ , V 3+ , V 5+ , Ge 4+ ). Increased steric hindrance around the coordination site from the biphenyl groups resulted in much longer reaction times for the complexation reaction compared to the other functional groups used, but the impact of our design toward stabilizing reactive species proved limited, as all complexes easily undergo hydrolysis of the Hf-O t Bu bond in the presence of water. As a result, electrochemical investigations of the ligands and hafnium complexes reveal that the redox events centered on the polyoxotungstate core can be tuned by varying the substituents on the silyl fragment, and exhibit a cathodic shift after coordination of the redox inactive tetravalent cation.
