Advanced architectures and the required technologies for next-generation communications satellite systems

The hardware requirements for multibeam operation and onboard data processing and switching on future communication satellites are reviewed. Topics addressed include multiple-beam antennas, frequency-addressable beams, baseband vs IF switching, FDM/TDMA systems, and bulk demodulators. The proposed use of these technologies in the NASA ACTS, Italsat, and the Japanese ETS-VI is discussed in detail and illustrated with extensive diagrams, maps, drawings, and tables of projected performance data.

Advanced satellite concepts for future generation VSAT networks

Advanced communication networks that use very-small-aperture terminals (VSATs) are considered. The techniques and technologies suitable for powerful satellites and system architectures for future VSAT networks are discussed. These include high effective isotropic radiated power, multiple-beam satellite antennas, and various access techniques. Examples of systems planned by the government and private industry are described.

ACTS - The first step toward a switchboard in the sky

The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS), now under development and scheduled for launch in May 1992, is presently the main focus of NASA's communications program. Key technologies for ACTS include electronically hopping spot beam antennas, on-board processing and circuit switching, and Ka-band transmission.
