Energy Efficiency Scaling for 2 Decades (EES2) Roadmap for Computing

In response to the looming crisis in global energy consumption required for advanced computing applications, the United States Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technology Office (AMMTO) is leading a multi-organizational effort to define a roadmap for energy efficiency scaling for two decades (EES2) with the aim to reduce energy use in all aspects of computation by more than a factor of 1000 in two decades. By July of 2024, over 60 organizations representing industry, academia, and the national laboratories have pledged to work in various aspects of research and development to enable energy efficiency in computing including in the development of the EES2 roadmap, with an initial public release in 2024 as the first phase of an ongoing commitment to energy-efficient and sustainable computation.

Pathways Analysis Summary: Decarbonization Potential for Industrial Subsectors - Preliminary Modeling Results

This provides a summary of draft modeling efforts undertaken by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) as an extension and expansion of the 2022 Industrial Decarbonization Roadmap. IEDO is providing these draft modeling results to support stakeholder engagement and inform office- and department wide strategy and decision making. Section 1 provides an overview of the context for this analysis and modeling as well as information on the decarbonization pillars characterized and the models themselves. Section 2 presents modeling results of one net-zero emissions pathway each for six industrial subsectors: cement, chemicals, food and beverage, iron and steel, petroleum refining, and pulp and paper. It is important to note that these pathways are just one example and there is no single pathway for any single industrial subsector. Competition across different possible pathways will be essential to industrial decarbonization success. Section 3 provides an overview of the “rest of industry” subsectors and a high-level overview of net-zero barriers, challenges, pathways, and technologies. IEDO will continue to consider net-zero pathways and modeling for these rest of industry subsectors. Additional details will be made available in the future on the IEDO website.

Optimum Operation of Microgrid Systems that Employ PV Solar and Battery Systems

On a global scale, over 1.3 billion lack access to electricity (85% in rural areas), and approximately 2.8 billion people rely on traditional biomass for cooking. The World Health Organization estimates that household air pollution from inefficient stoves causes more premature deaths than malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. Increasing demand for energy has led to dramatic increases in emissions. The need for reliable electricity and limiting emissions drives research on Resilient Hybrid Energy Systems (RHESs), which provide cleaner energy by combining wind, solar, and biomass energy with traditional fossil energy, increasing production efficiency and reliability and reducing generating costs and emissions. Microgrids have been shown as an efficient means of implementing RHESs, with some focused mainly on reducing the environmental impact of electric power generation. The technical challenges of designing, implementing, and applying microgrids involve conducting a cradle-to-grave Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to evaluate these systems’ environmental and economic performance under diverse operating conditions to evaluate resiliency. A sample RHES was developed and used to demonstrate the implementation in rural applications, where the system can provide reliable electricity for heating, cooling, lighting, and pumping clean water. The model and findings can be utilized by other regions around the globe facing similar challenges.
