Evidence for a common high-temperature superconducting effect in La(1.85)Sr(0.15)CuO4 and YBa2Cu3O7

The paper reports the positron-annihilation lifetime and Doppler-broadening energy spectra in La(1.85)Sr(0.15)CuO4 superconductors for T = 10-297 K. A strong temperature dependence in positron lifetime and momentum distribution parameters is observed for positron-electron annihilation data while the sample is in the superconducting state, but not while it is in the normal state. Experimental evidence is presented that the superconducting mechanisms in La(1.85)Sr(0.15)CuO4 and YBa2Cu3O7 are similar and it is suggested that this is a consequence of a common physics involving the delicate balance between localized- and itinerant-electron behavior.

Large-cell Monte Carlo renormalization of irreversible growth processes

Monte Carlo sampling is applied to a recently formulated direct-cell renormalization method for irreversible, disorderly growth processes. Large-cell Monte Carlo renormalization is carried out for various nonequilibrium problems based on the formulation dealing with relative probabilities. Specifically, the method is demonstrated by application to the 'true' self-avoiding walk and the Eden model of growing animals for d = 2, 3, and 4 and to the invasion percolation problem for d = 2 and 3. The results are asymptotically in agreement with expectations; however, unexpected complications arise, suggesting the possibility of crossovers, and in any case, demonstrating the danger of using small cells alone, because of the very slow convergence as the cell size b is extrapolated to infinity. The difficulty of applying the present method to the diffusion-limited-aggregation model, is commented on.

Node-avoiding Levy flight - A numerical test of the epsilon expansion

A study is conducted of an extension of Levy flight to include self-repulsion in the path of the walk. The extension is called node-avoiding Levy flight and its equivalence to the n approaches 0 limit of a statistical mechanical model for a magnetic system with long-range interactions between the spins is shown. By use of this equivalence it is possible to make a detailed comparison beween the results of the epsilon expansion for the magnetic model, a Monte Carlo simulation of the Levy flight model, and the results of a Flory-type argument. This is the first comparison of the epsilon expansion for epsilon much less than 1 with a numerical simulation for any model. Some speculations are made on applications of the model of node-avoiding Levy flight.
