Laser-enhanced synthesis and processing of diamond films from liquid hydrocarbons

We report synthesis of diamond films by pulsed laser irradiation on copper substrate immersed into liquid benzene. It is envisaged that carbon released from benzene at the liquid-solid interface is converted into diamond as a result of rapid quenching from a high temperature. The diamond crystallites were characterized using high resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging and electron diffraction techniques. Growth of thicker diamond films by subsequent chemical vapor deposition has been investigated by transmission and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Thin diamond film deposited during liquid phase provided seed for diamond growth during subsequent chemical vapor deposition.

In-situ integrated processing and characterization of thin films of high temperature superconductors, dielectrics and semiconductors by MOCVD

In this strategy of depositing the basic building blocks of superconductors, semiconductors, and dielectrics having common elements, researchers deposited superconducting films of Y-Ba-Cu-O, semiconductor films of Cu2O, and dielectric films of BaF2 and Y2O3 by metal oxide chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). By switching source materials entering the chamber, and by using direct writing capability, complex device structures like three terminal hybrid semiconductor/superconductor transistors can be fabricated. The Y-Ba-Cu-O superconducting thin films on BaF2/YSZ substrates show a T(sub c) of 80 K and are textured with most of the grains having their c-axis or a-axis perpendicular to the substrate. Electrical characteristics as well as structural characteristics of superconductors and related materials obtained by x-ray deffraction, electron microscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray analysis are discussed.

Laser Techniques in Photovoltaic Research

High-power laser pulses were used to replace the conventional high temperature furnace processing for the p-n junction formation step in high speed, low cost solar cell fabrication. Three different approaches to junction formation were tested: (1) laser annealing of ion-implanted Si in which laser radiation is used to remove the radiation damage and to recover the electrical activity in the implanted layer; (2) a process in which a thin film of dopant is first deposited on the substrate and then incorporated into the near-surface region by laser-induced diffusion; and (3) a process in which a heavily doped amorphous silicon layer is deposited on the Si substrate and epitaxially regrown from the melted substrate layer by laser radiation. All three methods were found to provide suitable candidates for high efficiency Si solar cells.
