The great observatories for space astrophysics

Motivated by the ancient urge to observe, measure, compute, and understand the nature of the Universe, the available advanced technology is used to place entire observatories into space for investigations across the spectrum. Stellar evolution, development and nature of the Universe, planetary exploration, technology, NASA's role, and careers in asronomy are displayed.

Frameworks for the future

NASA is exploring the techniques and technologies which will permit the construction of large structures in space. EASE (Experimental Assembly of Structures in Extravehicular Activity) and ACCESS (Assembly Concept for Construction of Erectable Space Structures) are structures which are carried in the Atlantis bay and are assembled in space by astronauts. The experimental structures were designed to be durable and strong, easily assembled, have removable parts, and be amenable to alterations using specially-designed tools. All space activities are first rehearsed in detail on earth, mainly in the NASA Neutral Buoyancy Facility. Thorough studies are also being done to examine the human factors of space assembly and to gather biomedical data to characterize the capabilities of humans doing construction work in space.

Renewing solar science: The solar maximum repair mission

The purpose of the Solar Maximum Repair Mission is to restore the operational capacity of the satellite by replacing the attitude control system module and servicing two of the scientific instruments on board. The mission will demonstrate the satellite servicing capacity of the Space Shuttle for the first time.

The Advanced X-Ray Astrophysics Facility. Observing the Universe in X-Rays

An overview of the Advanced X ray Astronophysics Facility (AXAF) program is presented. Beginning with a brief introduction to X ray astrophysics, the AXAF observatory is described including the onboard instrumentation and system capabilities. Possible X ray sources suitable for AXAF observation are identified and defined.

Repairing Solar Max: The Solar Maximum Repair Mission

Technology and procedures designed for replacing a faulty attitude control module and scientific instruments on the only orbiting solar observatory are described. The rationale for the repair mission is given and the operations of the flight support system within the cargo bay of the space shuttle are discussed. The use of the manned maneuvering unit in capturing the satellite and of the remote manipulator arm in berthing it are discussed, as well as the space tools to be used for repair operations. The space crew and their responsibilities are identified.
