Scale interactions and diabatic processes during the development of an Atlantic blocking event

Results of a case study of the development of a major blocking event over the North Atlantic Ocean are reported with emphasis on the potential roles of interactions between synoptic-scale systems and diabatic processes in the large-scale development. The approach used here involves the analysis of the evolution of the potential temperature on a constant potential vorticity (PV) surface, where the value of PV is chosen to be representative of that of the tropopause. The approach is shown to provide a simple way to qualitatively identify significant features in the development of the block, including scale interactions and diabatic processes.

Variations in synoptic-scale eddy activity during the life cycles of persistent flow anomalies

The objective of the study was to identify how synoptic-scale eddy activity varies throughout the life cycles of major scale flow anomalies. In particular, composite analyses of various measures of synoptic-scale eddy activity are constructed, with the composites obtained relative to the onset and termination times of cases typically associated with either blocking or abnormally intense zonal flows. The potential mechanisms that are likely to contribute to the observed changes in eddy behavior are discussed.

Interactions between synoptic-scale eddies and the large-scale flow during the development of blocking over the North Atlantic Ocean

Earlier studies of blocking are extended by examining the interactions that occur between the synoptic-scale eddies and the large-scale flow during the development of wintertime blocking events over the North Atlantic Ocean. In particular, attention is given to the change of synoptic-scale eddy activity during the development of blocking and to the role of anomalous forcing by synoptic-scale eddies in the development of large-scale flow anomalies. The dynamical mechanisms accounting for the observed variations in eddy activity are identified.

Relationships between persistent large-scale flow anomalies and variation in synoptic-scale eddy activity and cyclogenesis

Observational analyses to study the relationships between large-scale flow anomalies and variations in synoptic-scale eddy activity and cyclogenesis are presented. The way in which changes in the large-scale flow influence the behavior of synoptic-scale eddies and the way in which changes in eddies may feedback to influence the large-scale flow anomalies are examined. Situations characterized by differing large-scale flows are compared, showing well-defined diferences in synoptic-scale eddy activity. The net forcings of anomalous mean flows by eddies as deduced from tendency methods and E-vector analyses suggest that synoptic-scale eddies may play an important role in maintaining certain anomalous flow patterns such as blocking.
