Nanometer-Scale Acoustic Wave Packets Generated by Stochastic Core-Level Photoionization Events

We demonstrate that the absorption of femtosecond hard x-ray pulses excites quasispherical, high-amplitude, and high-wave-vector coherent acoustic phonon wave packets using an all hard-x-ray pump-probe scattering experiment. The time- and momentum-resolved diffuse scattering signal is consistent with an ensemble of 3D strain wave packets induced by the rapid electron cascade dynamics following photoionization at uncorrelated excitation centers. We quantify key parameters of this process, including the localization size of the stress field and the photon energy conversion efficiency into elastic energy. The parameters are determined by the photoelectron and Auger electron cascade dynamics, as well as the electron-phonon interaction. In particular, we obtain the localization size of the observed strain wave packet to be 1.5 and 2.5 nm for bulk SrTiO 3 and KTaO 3 single crystals, respectively. The results provide crucial information on the mechanism of x-ray energy deposition into matter and shed light on the shortest collective length scales accessible to coherent acoustic phonon generation using x-ray excitation. Enhancement of terahertz fields in LiTaO 3 waveguides using a conical pulse front

The development of methods for the generation of strong ultrafast electromagnetic pulses in the terahertz (THz) spectral range has led to a surge of progress in nonlinear THz spectroscopy and THz control of molecular and collective responses. For spectroscopy in the 1-THz range, the submillimeter wavelengths and associated large spot sizes, large optical elements, and short distances between final focusing elements and samples can lead to cumbersome experimental setups that are incompatible with some sample environments. Here, we introduce a novel terahertz ring excitation (TREx) optical pumping geometry to generate superposing, focusing fields in planar THz waveguides made out of the electro-optic material lithium tantalate. High THz fields, >175 kV/cm, are generated and measured optically with no free-space THz propagation. The field level achieved by pumping with a sequence of concentric rings of excitation light exceeds by about 20× the result of a single cylindrically focused line of pump light that has been used routinely in previous work. The technique opens new prospects for compact waveguide-based linear and nonlinear THz spectroscopy and signal processing.

Enhancement of THz generation in LiNbO3 waveguides via multi-bounce velocity matching

Abstract To realize the full promise of terahertz polaritonics (waveguide-based terahertz field generation, interaction, and readout) as a viable spectroscopy platform, much stronger terahertz fields are needed to enable nonlinear and even robust linear terahertz measurements. We use a novel geometric approach in which the optical pump is totally internally reflected to increase the distance over which optical rectification occurs. Velocity matching is achieved by tuning the angle of internal reflection. By doing this, we are able to enhance terahertz spectral amplitude by over 10x compared to conventional single-pass terahertz generation. An analysis of the depletion mechanisms reveals that 3-photon absorption and divergence of the pump beam are the primary limiters of further enhancement. This level of enhancement is promising for enabling routine spectroscopic measurements in an integrated fashion and is made more encouraging by the prospect of further enhancement by using longer pump wavelengths.
