Local molecular environment drives speciation and reactivity of ion complexes in concentrated salt solution

The speciation and reactivity of aqueous salt solutions are important for a wide variety of applications. However, application of this information is inhibited by broad disagreement about composition, mechanisms, and structure in concentrated solutions especially. Here, neutron diffraction with isotopic substitution measurements on aqueous zinc chloride solutions are used to calibrate molecular dynamics simulations that include effective electronic polarization. This allows us to probe the origin of speciation and reactivity of zinc chloride-water ion complexes, ZnCl x (H 2 O) y 2-x (x ≤ 4 and y ≤ 6), by comparing the reactivity of species in concentrated (4.5 m) and dilute (0.01 m) conditions. Within the concentrated solution, it is found that the extended solvation environment is dominated by solvent-separated ion complexes whose presence increases the free energy of activation for interconversion of species while simultaneously enhancing their thermodynamic stability. This concentration-dependent reactivity and stability suggests that other reactions, such as the nucleation of solid phases, will also be affected.

Multi-scale investigation of heterogeneous swift heavy ion tracks in stannate pyrochlore

Er 2 Sn 2 O 7 pyrochlore was irradiated with swift heavy Au ions (2.2 GeV), and the induced structural modifications were systematically examined using complementary characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and neutron total scattering with pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. Each technique probes different aspects and length scales of the transformed material regions. TEM revealed a core–shell ion track structure—an amorphous core surrounded by a disordered, anion-deficient fluorite shell—which was confirmed by XRD. Neutron total scattering, with sensitivity to the oxygen sublattice, provided relative fractions of amorphous and disordered fluorite phases and confirmed the presence of a defective pyrochlore phase, which largely maintains its structural ordering but is clearly distinct from the pristine pyrochlore matrix. This defect-rich pyrochlore phase forms a halo extending radially beyond the well-characterized core–shell track morphology observed in electron micrographs. Despite their differing long-range periodicity, the short-range structures of the amorphous, disordered, and defective pyrochlore phases are all modeled well with a weberite-type configuration. Evolution of the phase fractions with increasing ion fluence was examined to ascertain the phase-to-phase pathways that occur during primary and secondary ion impact. Furthermore, this approach extends knowledge about the multi-scale response of stannate pyrochlores to swift heavy ion irradiation in the electronic energy loss regime and improves existing track-overlap models.

Thermodynamic non-ideality and disorder heterogeneity in actinide silicate solid solutions

Non-ideal thermodynamics of solid solutions can greatly impact materials degradation behavior. We have investigated an actinide silicate solid solution system (USiO 4 –ThSiO 4 ), demonstrating that thermodynamic non-ideality follows a distinctive, atomic-scale disordering process, which is usually considered as a random distribution. Neutron total scattering implemented by pair distribution function analysis confirmed a random distribution model for U and Th in first three coordination shells; however, a machine-learning algorithm suggested heterogeneous U and Th clusters at nanoscale (~2 nm). The local disorder and nanosized heterogeneous is an example of the non-ideality of mixing that has an electronic origin. Partial covalency from the U/Th 5f–O 2p hybridization promotes electron transfer during mixing and leads to local polyhedral distortions. The electronic origin accounts for the strong non-ideality in thermodynamic parameters that extends the stability field of the actinide silicates in nature and under typical nuclear waste repository conditions.

Nematic fluctuations in iron-oxychalcogenide Mott insulators

Nematic fluctuations occur in a wide range physical systems from biological molecules to cuprates and iron pnictide high- T c superconductors. It is unclear whether nematicity in pnictides arises from electronic spin or orbital degrees of freedom. We studied the iron-based Mott insulators La 2 O 2 Fe 2 OM 2 M = (S, Se), which are structurally similar to pnictides. Nuclear magnetic resonance revealed a critical slowing down of nematic fluctuations and complementary Mössbauerr spectroscopy data showed a change of electrical field gradient. The neutron pair distribution function technique detected local C 2 fluctuations while neutron diffraction indicates that global C 4 symmetry is preserved. A geometrically frustrated Heisenberg model with biquadratic and single-ion anisotropic terms provides the interpretation of the low temperature magnetic fluctuations. The nematicity is not due to spontaneous orbital order, instead it is linked to geometrically frustrated magnetism based on orbital selectivity. This study highlights the interplay between orbital order and spin fluctuations in nematicity.

The electrolyte comprising more robust water and superhalides transforms Zn-metal anode reversibly and dendrite-free

A great challenge for all aqueous batteries, including Zn-metal batteries, is the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction on the low-potential anode. Herein, we report the formula of a highly concentrated aqueous electrolyte that mitigates hydrogen evolution by transforming water molecules more inert. The electrolyte comprises primarily ZnCl 2 and LiCl as an additive, both of which are inexpensive salts. The O–H covalent bonds in water get strengthened in a chemical environment that has fewer hydrogen bonding interactions and a greater number of Zn–Cl superhalides, as suggested by integrated characterization and simulation. As a result, the average Coulombic efficiency of zinc-metal anode is raised to an unprecedented >99.7% at 1 mA cm –2 . In the new electrolyte, the plating/stripping processes leave the zinc-metal anode dendrite-free, and the zinc-metal anode delivers stable plating/stripping cycles for 4000 hours with an areal capacity of 4 mAh cm –2 at 2 mA cm –2 . Furthermore, the high Coulombic efficiency of zinc-metal anode in the ZnCl 2 -LiCl mixture electrolyte is demonstrated in full cells with a limited anode. The V 2 O 5 ·H 2 O| |Zn full cell with an N/P mass ratio of 1.2 delivers a stable life of more than 2500 cycles, and the LiMn 2 O 4 | |Zn hybrid cell with an N/P mass ratio of 0.6 exhibits 1500 cycles in its stable life.

Experimental and computational studies of melting of the spinel phase in the Fe–Al–O ternary system

The melting behavior of spinel in the Fe–Al–O system at high temperatures (1500–1800 °C) was studied by a combination of experimental and computational investigations. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) at ultra-high temperatures coupled with cooling traces on CO 2 laser-heated levitated samples provided melting temperatures and the heats of fusion of (Fe,Al) 3 O 4 spinel phases. The experimental results are in fair agreement with the predictions using a published CALPHAD description and areas for modeling improvement are identified. New insights into the melting of defect spinel are provided.

Charge density modulation and defect ordering in the $Na_xMnBi_y$ magnetic semimetal

The I-Mn-V antiferromagnet, NaMnBi, develops a very large positive magnetoresistance (MR) up to 10 000% at 2 K and 9 T in crystals showing a semiconductor-to-metal transition (SMT). In the absence of an SMT, a modest (20%) MR is achieved. Here, we show that upon cooling below the magnetic transition, a spatial modulation appears giving rise to new Bragg peaks due to charge and defect ordering in a checkerboard pattern, with two kinds of modulation vectors, $q_1 = \left( \frac{2}{3}, 0, 1 \right)$ and $q_2 = \left( \frac{2}{3}, \frac{1}{3}, \frac {1}{2} \right)$. This constitutes a superlattice transition ($T_s$) that lowers the symmetry from the high-temperature centrosymmetric $P4/nmm$ to the noncentrosymmetric $P\overline{4}m2$. In crystals with a large MR, a close to room temperature $T_s$ is observed with $q_1$ appearing first, followed by $q_2$. In crystals with low MR, however, $T_s$ is much lower and only $q_1$ is observed. Finally, the charge modulation and spin fluctuations may both contribute to the enhancement of MR.

X-ray and neutron scattering measurements of ordering in a Cu 46 Zr 54 liquid

The structural evolution of the equilibrium and supercooled Cu 46 Zr 54 liquids was investigated with a combination of elastic neutron scattering (with isotopic substitution) and synchrotron x-ray scattering studies. The partial pair correlation functions were determined over a wide temperature range (~270 °C). These show that the Cu–Cu and Zr–Zr ordering increases as the temperature decreases, while the Cu–Zr ordering decreases. We note this surprising result is in contradiction with the results from molecular dynamics studies.

Correlating Macro and Atomic Structure with Elastic Properties and Ionic Transport of Glassy Li 2 S‐P 2 S 5 (LPS) Solid Electrolyte for Solid‐State Li Metal Batteries

Abstract A combination of high ionic conductivity and facile processing suggest that sulfide‐based materials are promising solid electrolytes that have the potential to enable Li metal batteries. Although the Li 2 S‐P 2 S 5 (LPS) family of compounds exhibit desirable characteristics, it is known that Li metal preferentially propagates through microstructural defects, such as particle boundaries and/or pores. Herein, it is demonstrated that a near theoretical density (98% relative density) LPS 75‐25 glassy electrolyte exhibiting high ionic conductivity can be achieved by optimizing the molding pressure and temperature. The optimal molding pressure reduces porosity and particle boundaries while preserving the preferred amorphous structure. Moreover, molecular rearrangements and favorable Li coordination environments for conduction are attained. Consequently, the Young's Modulus approximately doubles (30 GPa) and the ionic conductivity increases by a factor of five (1.1 mS cm −1 ) compared to conventional room temperature molding conditions. It is believed that this study can provide mechanistic insight into processing‐structure‐property relationships that can be used as a guide to tune microstructural defects/properties that have been identified to have an effect on the maximum charging current that a solid electrolyte can withstand during cycling without short‐circuiting.

Unprecedented lattice volume expansion on doping stereochemically active Pb 2+ into uniaxially strained structure of CaBa 1- x Pb x Zn 2 Ga 2 O 7

Lone pair cations like Pb 2+ are extensively utilized to modify and tune physical properties, such as nonlinear optical property and ferroelectricity, of some specific structures owing to their preference to adopt a local distorted coordination environment. Here we report that the incorporation of Pb 2+ into the polar “114”-type structure of CaBaZn 2 Ga 2 O 7 leads to an unexpected cell volume expansion of CaBa 1- x Pb x Zn 2 Ga 2 O 7 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1), which is a unique structural phenomenon in solid state chemistry. Structure refinements against neutron diffraction and total scattering data and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the unusual evolution of the unit cell for CaBa 1- x Pb x Zn 2 Ga 2 O 7 is due to the combination of the high stereochemical activity of Pb 2+ with the extremely strained [Zn 2 Ga 2 O 7 ] 4- framework along the c -axis. The unprecedented cell volume expansion of the CaBa 1- x Pb x Zn 2 Ga 2 O 7 solid solution in fact is a macroscopic performance of the release of uniaxial strain along c -axis when Ba 2+ is replaced with smaller Pb 2+ .

First Experiments: New Science Opportunities at the Spallation Neutron Source Second Target Station (abridged)

This brochure is an abridged version of a more comprehensive companion report. DOE proposes to build a Second Target Station (STS) at SNS to produce beams of cold neutrons with world-leading peak brightness at a repetition rate of 15 Hz, providing broad energy/wavelength ranges that can be used simultaneously. Construction of the STS will provide transformative capabilities that allow thousands of users from national laboratories, universities, and industry to address grand scientific challenges [Hemminger 2015], advance energy research, and accelerate industrial innovations through the combination of cold (long-wavelength) neutrons of unprecedented peak brightness and short neutron pulses with broad ranges of usable wavelengths or energy. The STS Project, now in progress at ORNL, will design, construct, install, and commission the facilities and equipment needed to create a world-leading source of cold neutrons of unprecedented peak brightness at SNS. Key aspects of the STS design, including preliminary descriptions of an illustrative suite of eight instruments, are presented in the section “The STS at SNS.” The capabilities offered by the STS instruments (22 when fully built out) will complement those of the FTS and HFIR, providing the United States with unparalleled resources for neutron scattering at the world’s leading high–peak brightness cold neutron source.
