Chemical looping combustion oxygen carrier production cost study

The objective of this study was to estimate the cost of commercial production of oxygen carriers (OCs) for large-scale application in a mature, chemical looping combustion (CLC) power generation industry. Estimates of cost were made for two production facility scenarios: 1) build and operate an on-site, OC production facility located at a 550 MW CLC power plant site; and 2) build and operate a central production facility to produce and distribute OCs to the U.S. CLC power generation industry. Two OC production techniques were addressed: mechanical mixing and co-precipitation. Representative OCs that have production raw materials with sufficient commercial availability to support a CLC industry are ilmenite, a natural OC, and four engineered OC types, Fe 2 O 3 -based, CuO-based, NiO-based, and CuFeAlO 4 -based, with candidate OC support materials Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 . The costs of the OC production raw materials represent the major portion of the OC product cost; the OC production cost, in dollars per kg, has been found to be nearly a linear function of the OC raw materials cost, in dollars per kg. In conclusion, the estimated OC product costs can be used to estimate the maximum OC loss rate yielding a designated CLC power plant cost-of-electricity (COE) target as a development guide, and it has been found that the maximum OC makeup rate, in kg per hour, achieving a designated COE reduction goal relative to a conventional pulverized coal (PC) power plant, will be nearly inversely proportional to the OC production raw materials cost, in dollars per kg.

NETL Gen-2 Oxygen Carrier Assessment

The National Energy Technology Laboratory’s (NETL) Research and Innovation Center (RIC) has been conducting laboratory-scale tests to develop a new chemical looping combustion (CLC) oxygen carrier (OC) having copper, iron, and alumina components. This OC, designated as the Gen-2 OC throughout this report, has high maximum oxygen capacity and has been tested extensively in the RIC methane-fueled chemical looping reforming. A screening analysis has been conducted to estimate the performance and cost of CLC when utilizing the Gen-2 OC. In this report, the performance and cost results are compared to those of a range of previously assessed CLC OCs to provide a basis to establish the relative merits and issues associated with the Gen-2 OC. Base load CLC power plants utilizing the Gen-2 OC and the three comparison OCs considered in this assessment (Fe 2 O 3- , CuO-, CaSO 4- based) are estimated to have thermal efficiency and cost of electricity (COE) characteristics potentially superior to those of the equivalent conventional pulverized coal (PC) power plant applying conventional, amine-based CO 2 capture technology. The current assessment does not address flexible plant operation. An evaluation of the CLC plant designed for flexible operation would need to include a comparable PC plant designed for flexible operation.

Chemical Looping Combustion Sensitivity Analyses: CLOU Concepts

The objective of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) effort described in this report is to generate a reference-CLOU power plant performance and cost screening assessment and associated sensitivity analyses. To do this, a review of the CLOU literature was first performed to establish a complete design basis for a reference-CLOU power plant. While complete design-basis information is not available for any CLOU oxygen carrier, a representative design basis was compiled from a variety of literature sources. The design basis was then applied to generate reference-CLOU power plant material and energy balances, the unique CLOU process equipment was approximately sized and specified, equipment cost estimates were developed, and total power plant performance, capital investment, and cost of electricity (COE) estimates were compiled. Major performance and cost sensitivity parameters were identified, and performance and cost sensitivity analyses were performed. The results are these analyses relate not only the performance and cost potential of CLOU power generation, but also provide guidance to CLOU oxygen carrier and process researchers and developers.
