Random singlet-like state in the dimer-based triangular antiferromagnet Ba 6 Y 2 Rh 2 Ti 2 O 17 − δ

We present the magnetic, thermodynamic, and muon spin relaxation ( μ SR ) results of the dimer-based triangular antiferromagnet Ba 6 Y 2 Rh 2 Ti 2 O 17 − δ . The magnetic susceptibility data show the sub-Curie-Weiss behavior χ ( T ) ∝ T − α χ below 100 K, suggesting random magnetism. The isothermal magnetization results reveal the presence of weakly interacting structural orphan spins about 6.1 % at 2 K, arising from the oxygen deficiency. The comprehensive μ SR experiments exhibit the coexisting relaxing and nonrelaxing components along with the thermally activated behavior in the muon spin relaxation rate, reflecting the fluctuating orphan spins in the dimer singlet background. In addition, we observe the scaling behavior of M ( H , T ) in H / T and P z ( t ) in t / H LF with the scaling exponents α χ = α M = 0.75 and α μ = 0.72 , respectively, but not for the magnetic specific heat data. The failure of the scaling relation in C m ( H , T ) / T implies low-energy excitations dressed by the conventional orphan spins. Based on these observations, we find that the magnetic ground state resembles random singlets and discuss the possible configurations of the spin dimer unit Rh 2 O 9 . Our results shed light on the role of quenched disorder in the dimer-based frustrated magnets. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Phonon Anharmonicity and Spin–Phonon Coupling in CrI 3

We report on the far-infrared, temperature-dependent optical properties of a CrI 3 transition metal halide single crystal, a van der Waals ferromagnet (FM) with a Curie temperature of 61 K. In addition to the expected phonon modes determined by the crystalline symmetry, the optical reflectance and transmittance spectra of CrI 3 single crystals show many other excitations as a function of temperature as a consequence of the combination of a strong lattice anharmonicity and spin–phonon coupling. This complex vibrational spectrum highlights the presence of entangled interactions among the different degrees of freedom in CrI 3 .

Low energy electrodynamics of CrI 3 layered ferromagnet

We report on the optical properties from terahertz (THz) to Near-Infrared (NIR) of the layered magnetic compound CrI 3 at various temperatures, both in the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phase. In the NIR spectral range, we observe an insulating electronic gap around 1.1 eV which strongly hardens with decreasing temperature. The blue shift observed represents a record in insulating materials and it is a fingerprint of a strong electron-phonon interaction. Moreover, a further gap hardening is observed below the Curie temperature, indicating the establishment of an effective interaction between electrons and magnetic degrees of freedom in the ferromagnetic phase. Similar interactions are confirmed by the disappearance of some phonon modes in the same phase, as expected from a spin-lattice interaction theory. Therefore, the optical properties of CrI 3 reveal a complex interaction among electronic, phononic and magnetic degrees of freedom, opening many possibilities for its use in 2-Dimensional heterostructures.

Widely spaced planes of magnetic dimers in the Ba 6 Y 2 Rh 2 Ti 2 O 17-δ hexagonal perovskite

In this work, we report the synthesis and initial characterization of Ba 6 Y 2 Rh 2 Ti 2 O 17-δ , a previously unreported material, to the best of our knowledge, with a hexagonal symmetry structure. Face-sharing RhO 6 octahedra form triangular planes of Rh 2 O 9 dimers that are widely separated in the perpendicular direction. The material displays a small effective magnetic moment, due to the Rh ions present, and a negative Curie-Weiss temperature. The charge transport and optical band gaps are very similar, near 0.16 eV. A large upturn in the heat capacity at temperatures below 1 K, suppressed by applied magnetic fields larger than μ 0 H = 2T, is observed. A large T-linear term in the specific heat (γ = 166 mJ/mol f.u-K 2 ) is seen, although the material is insulating at low temperatures. These results suggest the possibility of a spin liquid ground state in this material.

Structure, Magnetism, and First-Principles Modeling of the Na 0.5 La 0.5 RuO 3 Perovskite

High-purity polycrystalline Na 0.5 La 0.5 RuO 3 was synthesized by a solid-state method, and its properties were studied by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and resistivity measurements. In this study, we find it to be an orthorhombic perovskite, in contrast to an earlier report, with random La/Na mixing. With a Curie–Weiss temperature of –231 K and an effective moment of 2.74 μB/mol Ru, there is no magnetic ordering down to 1.8 K. A broad hump at 1.4 K in the heat capacity, however, indicates the presence of a glassy magnetic transition, which we attribute to the influence of the random distribution of Na and La on the perovskite A-sites. Comparison to CaRuO 3 , a structurally ordered ruthenate perovskite with a similar A-site ionic radius and magnetic properties, is presented. First-principles calculations indicate that the Na–La distribution determines the local magnetic exchange interactions between Ru ions, favoring either antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic coupling when the local environment is Na- or La-rich. Thus, our data and analysis suggest that mixing cations with different charges and sizes on the A-site in this perovskite results in magnetic frustration through a balance of local magnetic exchange interactions.

Frustrated spin-1/2 dimer compound K 2 Co 2 ( Se O 3 ) 3 with easy-axis anisotropy

Magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and specific-heat measurements under both in-plane and out-of-plane field on K 2 Co 2 (SeO 3 ) 3 single crystals are reported. The Co dimers in this compound, which are made from face-sharing effective spin-1/2 CoO 6 octahedra, sit on the corners of a geometrically frustrating triangular planar lattice. No long-range magnetic ordering is found down to 0.35 K, which, together with the large negative Curie-Weiss temperature obtained from fitting the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, indicates that the system is magnetically frustrated. Analysis of the field and orientation dependence of the magnetic and thermodynamic properties suggests the presence of an easy-axis anisotropy. Furthermore, the magnetic fluctuations present due to geometric frustration are more resistant to an in-plane field than a perpendicular-to-plane field.
