Introduction to COFFE: The Next-Generation HPCMP CREATE-AV CFD Solver

HPCMP CREATE-AV Conservative Field Finite Element (COFFE) is a modular, extensible, robust numerical solver for the Navier-Stokes equations that invokes modularity and extensibility from its first principles. COFFE implores a flexible, class-based hierarchy that provides a modular approach consisting of discretization, physics, parallelization, and linear algebra components. These components are developed with modern software engineering principles to ensure ease of uptake from a user's or developer's perspective. The Streamwise Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin (SU/PG) method is utilized to discretize the compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations tightly coupled with a variety of turbulence models. The mathematics and the philosophy of the methodology that makes up COFFE are presented.

Addition of Improved Shock-Capturing Schemes to OVERFLOW 2.1

Existing approximate Riemann solvers do not perform well when the grid is not aligned with strong shocks in the flow field. Three new approximate Riemann algorithms are investigated to improve solution accuracy and stability in the vicinity of strong shocks. The new algorithms are compared to the existing upwind algorithms in OVERFLOW 2.1. The new algorithms use a multidimensional pressure gradient based switch to transition to a more numerically dissipative algorithm in the vicinity of strong shocks. One new algorithm also attempts to artificially thicken captured shocks in order to alleviate the errors in the solution introduced by "stair-stepping" of the shock resulting from the approximate Riemann solver. This algorithm performed well for all the example cases and produced results that were almost insensitive to the alignment of the grid and the shock.

Solver and Turbulence Model Upgrades to OVERFLOW 2 for Unsteady and High-Speed Applications

An implicit unfactored SSOR algorithm has been added to the overset Navier-Stokes CFD code OVERFLOW 2 for unsteady and moving body applications. The HLLEM and HLLC third-order spatial upwind convective flux models have been added for high-speed flow applications. A generalized upwind transport equation has been added for solution of the two-equation turbulence models and the species equations. The generalized transport equation is solved using an unfactored SSOR implicit algorithm. Three hybrid RANS/DES turbulence models have been added for unsteady flow applications. Wall function boundary conditions that include compressibility and heat transfer effects have been also been added to OVERFLOW 2.
