The use of antioptimization to compare alternative structural models

Structural models are usually tested by comparing their response with that of a reference structure (an actual structure or a more refined model) to a limited number of arbitrary loads. This test is not always reliable because the loads are arbitrary. An antioptimization-based method is proposed to test structural models. This method compares a structural model with a reference model or an actual structure under the worst loading case that maximizes the error in the model. Specifically, the method identifies the loading case that maximizes the difference between the responses of two models of the same structure using optimization. This method can be used to design experiments in order to validate a structural model. It can also be applied to identify damage in a structure by determining the load that maximizes the difference in the behavior of the damaged and the intact structure. The proposed method is illustrated by applying it to a plate and an automotive structure.

An easily implemented static condensation method for structural sensitivity analysis

A black-box approach to static condensation for sensitivity analysis is presented with illustrative examples of a cube and a car structure. The sensitivity of the structural response with respect to joint stiffness parameter is calculated using the direct method, forward-difference, and central-difference schemes. The efficiency of the various methods for identifying joint stiffness parameters from measured static deflections of these structures is compared. The results indicate that the use of static condensation can reduce computation times significantly and the black-box approach is only slightly less efficient than the standard implementation of static condensation. The ease of implementation of the black-box approach recommends it for use with general-purpose finite element codes that do not have a built-in facility for static condensation.

Design of aircraft wings subjected to gust loads - A system reliability approach

A method for system reliability-based design of aircraft wing structures is presented. A wing of a light commuter aircraft designed for gust loads according to the FAA regulations is compared with one designed by system reliability optimization. It is shown that system reliability optimization has the potential of improving dramatically the safety and efficiency of new designs. The reasons for the differences between the deterministic and reliability-based designs are explained.
