Kalman Filter Based Estimation of Surface Conductivity in STM

In scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), the surface conductivity, σ, contributes to the total tunneling current due to a quantum phenomenon. Here, the surface conductivity may change from atom to atom during a scan. It is an important electronic property of the surface that cannot be directly measured with current spectroscopy methods. In this paper, we propose an offline estimation method based on augmented state Kalman filter to determine σ. We demonstrate the successful application of this method to a set of STM images obtained from a Si(100) – 2 × 1:H passivated surface.

Iterative Learning Control for Video-rate Atomic Force Microscopy

We present a control scheme for video-rate atomic force microscopy with rosette pattern. The controller structure involves a feedback internal-model-based controller and a feedforward iterative learning controller. The iterative learning controller is designed to improve tracking performance of the feedback-controlled scanner by rejecting the repetitive disturbances arising from the system nonlinearities. We investigate the performance of two inversion techniques for constructing the learning filter. We conduct tracking experiments using a two-degree-of-freedom microelectromechanical system (MEMS) nanopositioner at frame rates ranging from 5 to 20 frames per second. Furthermore, the results reveal that the algorithm converges rapidly and the iterative learning controller significantly reduces both the transient and steady-state tracking errors. We acquire and report a series of high-resolution time-lapsed video-rate AFM images with the rosette pattern.

AFM Microcantilever With a Collocated AlN Sensor-Actuator Pair: Enabling Efficient Q-Control for Dynamic Imaging

This manuscript presents a novel microcantilever with an embedded piezoelectric sensor-actuator pair for dynamic atomic force microscopy (AFM). The transducer pair is constructed from a two-layered AlN stack. Stacking the piezoelectric transducers in this manner leads to a minimal feedthrough from actuation to sense electrode, granting a high dynamic range frequency response for dynamic mode AFM. The cantilever's design allows for dual mode operation at 1 st and 2 nd resonance modes. High resolution tapping mode imaging results are reported, while the cantilever is operated at these modes. A feedback control loop is used to modify quality factor of the 1 st mode of the cantilever, using a positive position feedback (PPF) controller. Here, a faster response time is achieved by reducing the Q-factor, enabling the cantilever to track the topography at a higher scan rate. Results of bimodal AFM imaging are reported, using amplitude changes of the 1 st mode for surface topography, while material properties are encoded in phase changes of the 2 nd mode.
