Advancing Manufacturing Water Resilience: Addressing Risks through New Approaches and Technologies

Water is indispensable in manufacturing operations, and many manufacturers operate on the assumption that water of sufficient quality and quantity will be available whenever and wherever needed. As such, the importance of water to this sector has been overlooked, despite its critical importance for operations and meeting production demands, due to perceived sufficient availability and low cost of water to manufacturers. However, the situation is changing as water-related risks are markedly increasing due to aging infrastructure, changing climate, and resource extraction, which alter global and regional water cycles and characteristics. These changes are occurring against a backdrop of intensifying competition from other sectors for scarce and/or unevenly distributed water resources and changing trends in water needs. Section 1 of this report explores those risks in the U.S. context, while the remaining sections detail the work needed to advance the resilience of manufacturing water supplies to these changing risks by filling critical data gaps, re-evaluating the value of water to manufacturers, and advancing opportunities for novel technologies and analyses. The intended audience for this report is broad, including manufacturers, decision makers, researchers, and policymakers.

Wastewater hydrogen nexus (WwHeN): Greening the wastewater industry via integration with the hydrogen economy

As industries rally toward achieving net zero emissions, hydrogen and hydrogen-based fuels are emerging as key players in decarbonization efforts. Although the primary technology for producing renewable natural gas has been well implemented in the wastewater industry, the “decarbonization based goal setting” is trailing. This perspective assimilates existing literature presented in other contexts to highlight the need for framing the decarbonization dialog by using green hydrogen as a potential pathway for the wastewater industry. Specifically, we note the importance of (a) developing the decarbonization or net zero focus in the wastewater industry, and (b) colocating the wastewater industry with hydrogen production facilities. Finally, we also delve into technological, cost, and operational considerations to understand the readiness level of key stakeholders to identify future research and development opportunities for the wastewater hydrogen nexus.

Cleaner Chips: Decarbonization in Semiconductor Manufacturing

The growth of the information and communication technology sector has vastly accelerated in recent decades because of advancements in digitalization and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions data of the top six semiconductor manufacturing companies (Samsung Electronics, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, Micron, SK Hynix, Kioxia, and Intel) were gathered from the publicly accessible Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP) website for 2020. Scope 3 emissions had the largest share in total annual emissions with an average share of 52%, followed by Scope 2 (32%) and Scope 1 (16%). Because of the absence of a standardized methodology for Scope 3 emissions estimation, each company used different methodologies that resulted in differences in emissions values. An analysis of the CDP reporting data did not reveal information on strategies implemented by companies to reduce Scope 3 emissions. The use of renewable energy certificates had the largest effect on decarbonization centered on reducing Scope 2 emissions, followed by the deployment of perfluorocarbon reduction technologies to help reduce Scope 1 fugitive emissions. Technology-specific marginal abatement costs of CO2 were also estimated and varied between −416 and 12,215 USD/t CO2 eq., which primarily varied depending on the technology deployed.
