Catalytic Upgrading of Pyrolysis Products for the Production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

The objective of this project is advance the state-of-technology for a catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) + hydrotreating (HT) process to produce sustainable aviation fuel and other biogenic products. Our approach focuses on performing integrated experiments using realistic biomass feedstocks and non-noble metal technical catalyst formulations. CFP is performed in an ex-situ configuration using a fluidized bed reactor without co-fed hydrogen. Research advancements over the past two years include establishing benchmark yield structures and compositional data for each step of the biomass-to-SAF process, demonstrating the ability to produce a cycloalkane-rich SAF product that meets key ASTM 4054 guidelines, generating benchmark characterization data for technical catalyst formulations with an emphasis on determining the unique composition and combustion properties of biogenic coke, and establishing bio-oil critical material attributes to mitigate the risk of plugging during down-stream hydroprocessing. Other impacts from this project include generation of broadly enabling scientific knowledge (12 publications/12 presentations since 2021), engagement with industry partners (Johnson Matthey, ExxonMobil, Phillips 66), and identification of a promising pathway to market that addresses emerging demands for biogenic refinery feedstocks.

Accelerating Materials Discovery: Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable, High-Performance Polymers

PolyID enables the discovery of polymers with advanced performance and greater sustainability while reducing material development timelines. The material design space is immense and cannot be reasonably probed using an Edisionian approach. High-throughput property prediction, enabled by artificial intelligence provides a hypothesis driven approach for down selection of candidate polymers to pursue experimentally. To aid experimentalists in the down selection of material targets this high-throughput, machine learning-based tool is capable of predicting polymer properties simply from molecular structures. Currently, transport, thermal, and mechanical properties across 7 polymer class (polyamides, polyesters, polycarbonates, polyimides, polyolefins, polyacrylates, and polyurethanes) can be predicted, and the PolyID platform has been flexibly designed so new materials and properties can be added.

Developing a High Value Chemical Coproduct: Bio-Base Insecticides from Catalytic Fast Pyrolysis

Coproduction of biochemicals from the thermochemical conversion of biomass is a strategy to reduce biofuel costs and improve bio-oil quality in an integrated biorefinery. (Challenge) Cost effective separations of coproducts from thermochemical conversion streams remains a challenge largely due to the heterogenous nature and stability of thermochemical conversion streams. (Solution) Bio-based insecticides isolated from catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) oils are a viable coproduct that can overcome the oil is more stable, they are a high value product, and they can remain a mixture of components. (Approach) This work focuses on the development of a bio-based insecticide coproduct that is distilled from a catalytic fast pyrolysis bio-oil produced using a platinum on titanium dioxide (Pt/TiO2) catalyst to upgrade pyrolysis vapors.
