Parametric identification of a vibratory system with a clearance

An analytical and experimental investigation of a vibratory system with a clearance was conducted. A finite element model and an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom closed-form solution were used to determine the dynamic parameters and response of an experimental structure interacting with a gap. The closed-form solution is obtained by taking advantage of the piecewise linearity of the system. Results from these solution methods are in agreement with experimental data. The results also suggest that the closed-form solution approximates the response of the experimental structure with accuracy greater than that of the finite element model. The closed-form solution was also used to determine the gap size of the structure. The parameter identification procedure utilized in this study appears to be simple to use and can be readily extended to other types of piecewise-linear multi-degree-of-freedom systems.

Stability and bifurcation analysis of oscillators with piecewise-linear characteristics - A general approach

A general approach is developed for determining the periodic solutions and their stability of nonlinear oscillators with piecewise-smooth characteristics. A modified harmonic balance/Fourier transform procedure is devised for the analysis. The procedure avoids certain numerical differentiation employed previously in determining the periodic solutions, therefore enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the method. Stability of the solutions is determined via perturbations of their state variables. The method is applied to a forced oscillator interacting with a stop of finite stiffness. Flip and fold bifurcations are found to occur. This led to the identification of parameter ranges in which chaotic response occurred.

Periodic response of multi-disk rotors with bearing clearances

The forced steady state response of a multi-disk rotor system involving a clearance at one of the bearings is determined by using a harmonic balance approach. The impedance method is applied to each of the harmonic steady state components in order to reduce the system to its displacement at the nonlinear bearing support. The results reveal the interrelated roles of the bearing clearance, mass eccentricity and side force in producing dangerous subharmonics. The significant effects of the strong nonlinearity of a bearing clearance are studied as related to the various system parameters. The results show that the approach developed in this study is computationally superior to numerical integration methods in analyzing multi-disk rotor systems with strong nonlinearity.

Steady-state analysis of a nonlinear rotor-housing system

The periodic steady state response of a high pressure oxygen turbopump (HBOTP) of a Space Shuttle main engine (SSME), involving a clearance between the bearing and housing carrier, is sought. A harmonic balance method utilizig Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm is developed for the analysis. An impedance method is used to reduce the number of degrees of freedom to the displacements at the bearing clearance. Harmonic and subharmonic responses to imbalance for various system parameters are studied. The results show that the computational technique developed in this study is an effective and flexible method for determining the stable and unstable periodic response of complex rotor-housing systems with clearance type nonlinearity.

Forced periodic vibration of unsymmetric piecewise-linear systems

The forced steady response of a single degree of freedom system involving a large nonlinearity, represented by unsymmetric piecewise-linear stiffness, is determined by a harmonic balance Newton-Raphson method with the application of the fast Fourier transformation (FFT) algorithm. All possible subharmonic, harmonic, and superharmonic responses are sought. The responses of two systems involving subharmonic and superharmonic dominant motions are calculated by the newly developed method and compared with previously published findings. The results obtained by using this method reveal the details of the response of the systems more efficiently than previous methods.

Experimental verification and practical application of torquewhirl theory of rotordynamic instability

A theory developed by Vance in 1978 to explain the destabilizing effect of torque on a whirling rotor was experimentally verified. The measurements made on a specially designed test apparatus are described. New computer models were also developed to investigate the effect of torque on rotordynamic stability of multidisk flexible rotor bearing systems. The effect of torque was found to be most pronounced when the system is already marginally stable from other influences. The modifications required to include torque in a typical shaft transfer matrix are described, and results are shown which identify the type of rotor design most sensitive to load torque.

Rotordynamic Analysis of the SSME Turbopumps Using Reduced Models

Alternative methods for the rotor-dynamic and sensitivity analysis of large rotor systems are examined. The methods are assessed for their ability to utilize accurate models of reduced size along with effective procedures for describing the dynamic behavior of the systems. Frequency response-based techniques are developed for determining the steady state response to imbalance of the space shuttle main engine (SSME) turbopumps and the related eigenvalue problem. The rotor and housing are represented by reduced receptances associated with their coupling points. The housing may be described by all of its normal modes within a frequency range of interest. The effects of truncated higher and lower modes are accounted for in an approximate manner. A procedure is described for determining the sensitivity of the coupling forces to changes in the coupling elements and rotor speed of the turbopump systems. In addition, an eigenvalue sensitivity analysis technique is adopted for application to the systems. Computer programs were developed for the numerical implementation of the impedance and eigenvalue sensitivity formulated in this study.
