3D Heisenberg universality in the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS 3

Van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials are comprised of layers of atomically thin sheets, making them ideal platforms for studying magnetism at the two-dimensional (2D) limit. These materials are at the center of a host of novel types of experiments, however, there are notably few pathways to directly probe their magnetic structure. We confirm the magnetic order within a single crystal of NiPS 3 and show it can be accessed with resonant elastic X-ray diffraction along the edge of the vdW planes in a carefully grown crystal by detecting structurally forbidden resonant magnetic X-ray scattering. We find the magnetic order parameter has a critical exponent of β ~ 0.36, indicating that the magnetism of these vdW crystals is more adequately characterized by the three-dimensional (3D) Heisenberg universality class. We verify these findings with first-principles density functional theory, Monte-Carlo simulations, and density matrix renormalization group calculations.

Second dome of superconductivity in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 at high pressure

Evidence is growing that a second dome of high-T c superconductivity can be accessed in the cuprates by increasing the doping beyond the first dome. Here, in this study, we use ab initio methods without invoking any free parameters, such as the Hubbard U, to reveal that pressure could turn YBa 2 ⁢Cu 3 ⁢O 7 into an ideal candidate for second dome superconductivity, displaying the predicted signature of strongly hybridized d x 2 -y 2 and d z 2 orbitals. Notably, pressure is found to induce a phase transition replacing the antiferromagnetic phases with an orbitally degenerate d-d phase. Our study suggests that the origin of the second dome is correlated with the oxygen-hole fraction in the CuO 2 planes and the collapse of the pseudogap phase.

Extracting the electronic structure of light elements in bulk materials through a Compton scattering method in the readily accessible hard x-ray regime

Here, our Compton profile measurements of Ti and TiH 2 using readily available hard X-ray radiation at 27.5 keV, detected by both a Hitachi Vortex silicon-drift detector and a high-resolution superconducting transition-edge sensor array, are found to be in excellent accord with state-of-the-art density functional theory based calculations. The spherically averaged difference between the Compton profiles of TiH 2 and Ti is well described by an inverted parabola, supporting an itinerant behavior of the electron gas screening the protons in the Ti matrix. Our experimental approach, validated by two different detectors, extends the applicability of Compton scattering technique to the readily accessible hard x-ray regime (below 30 keV). Our study suggests possibilities for experiments at low-flux bending magnet synchrotron beamlines and paves the way for the development of tabletop Compton experiments with x-ray tubes.
