Forced Power Systems Oscillations Due to Cyberattacks: Threats, Detection and Partial Mitigation

Forced oscillations in power systems can be caused by misconfigured controllers at generator stations. They can also be caused by cyberattacks against the exciters or governors. This paper explores the effects of forced oscillations from cyberattacks on generator excitation and governor systems and the effectiveness of a novel control system for a static var compensator in mitigating those oscillations to enhance transmission system resilience. A brief overview of oscillations, especially forced oscillations, within power systems is presented, along with an overview of cyberattacks on power systems. This paper also examines and implements FACTS devices to partially mitigate the forced oscillations created by cyberattacks by reducing the magnitude of the oscillations caused by the attack. The proposed approach is more effective against attacks targeting exciters.

Secured fault detection in a power substation

Systems and methods for fault detection and protection in electric power systems that evaluates electromagnetic transients caused by faults. A fault can be detected using sampled data from a first monitored point in the power system. Detection of fault transients and associated characteristics, including transient direction, can also be extracted through evaluation of sample data from other monitored points in the power system. A monitoring device can evaluate whether to trip a switching device in response to the detection of the fault and based on confirmation of an indication of detection of fault transients at the other monitored points of the power system. The determination of whether to trip or activate the switching device can also be based on other factors, including the timing of receipt of an indication of the detection of the fault transients and/or an evaluation of the characteristics of the detected transients.

AI & Physics-Based Bad Command/Data Detection in Large Power Electronics Systems: Multi-Port Autonomous Reconfigurable Solar Power Plant (MARS)

Detection of bad data from measurement sensors and bad commands from control centers need to be carried out to avoid instabilities within large power electronics systems. Towards the same, in this paper, model and data driven methods are proposed to identify anomalies in measured data and commands received by large power electronics systems. The large power electronics system considered in this paper is a multi-port autonomous reconfigurable solar power plant (MARS), which consists of photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage systems (ESSs) that connect to high-voltage direct current (HVdc) system and transmission ac power grid. The proposed algorithms in the MARS power plant to detect bad data from measurements and bad commands from control centers are evaluated in simulations and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests. Furthermore, it has been observed that the proposed algorithms are able to detect bad measurements and commands in all the use cases evaluated.
