Extended linear-in- T resistivity due to electron-phason scattering in moiré superlattices

Due to its incommensurate nature, moiré superlattices host not only acoustic phonons but also another type of soft collective modes called phasons. Here, we investigate the impact of electron-phason scattering on the transport properties of moiré systems. We show that the resistivity can scale linearly with temperature down to temperatures much lower than the Bloch-Grüneisen scale defined by electron kinematics on the Fermi surface. This result stems from the friction between layers, which transfers phason spectral weight to a broad diffusive low-energy peak in the mechanical response of the system. As a result, phason scattering becomes a very efficient channel for entropy production at low temperatures. We also consider the contributions of phasons to thermodynamic properties at low temperatures and find a “metallic-like” linear-in-T behavior for the specific heat, despite the fact that this behavior is due to mechanical and not electronic degrees of freedom. Finally, we discuss the implications of this finding to reports of linear-in-T resistivity in the phase diagram of twisted bilayer graphene.

Degradation of Phonons in Disordered Moiré Superlattices

The elastic collective modes of a moiré superlattice arise not from vibrations of a rigid crystal but from the relative displacement between the constituent layers. Despite their similarity to acoustic phonons, these modes, called phasons, are not protected by any conservation law. Furthermore, we show that disorder in the relative orientation between the layers and thermal fluctuations associated with their sliding motion degrade the propagation of sound in the moiré superlattice. Specifically, the phason modes become overdamped at low energies and acquire a finite gap, which displays a universal dependence on the twist-angle variance. Thus, twist-angle inhomogeneity is manifested not only in the non-interacting electronic structure of moiré systems, but also in their phonon-like modes. More broadly, our results have important implications for the electronic properties of twisted moiré systems that are sensitive to the electron-phonon coupling.

Moiré nematic phase in twisted double bilayer graphene

Graphene moiré superlattices display electronic flat bands. At integer fillings of these flat bands, energy gaps due to strong electron-electron interactions are generally observed. However, the presence of other correlation-driven phases in twisted graphitic systems at non-integer fillings is unclear. Here, we report the existence of threefold rotational symmetry breaking in twisted double bilayer graphene. Using spectroscopic imaging over large and uniform areas to characterize the direction and degree of C 3 symmetry breaking, we find it to be prominent only at energies corresponding to the flat bands and nearly absent in the remote bands. We demonstrate that the magnitude of the rotational symmetry breaking does not depend on the degree of the heterostrain or the displacement field, being instead a manifestation of an interaction-driven electronic nematic phase. We show that the nematic phase is a primary order that arises from the normal metal state over a wide range of doping away from charge. Furthermore, our modelling suggests that the nematic instability is not associated with the local scale of the graphene lattice, but is an emergent phenomenon at the scale of the moiré lattice.

Self-induced spin-orbit torques in metallic ferromagnets

Herein we present a phenomenological theory of spin-orbit torques in a metallic ferromagnet with spin-relaxing boundaries. The model is rooted in the coupled diffusion of charge and spin in the bulk of the ferromagnet, where we account for the anomalous Hall effects as well as the anisotropic magnetoresistance in the corresponding constitutive relations for both charge and spin sectors. The diffusion equations are supplemented with suitable boundary conditions reflecting the spin-sink capacity of the environment. In inversion-asymmetric heterostructures, the uncompensated spin accumulation exerts a dissipative torque on the order parameter, giving rise to a current-dependent linewidth in the ferromagnetic resonance with a characteristic angular dependence. We compare our model to recent spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements, illustrating how rich self-induced spin-torque phenomenology can arise even in simple magnetic structures.
