Nucleus-nucleus interactions between 20 and 65 GeV per nucleon

A hybrid electronic-counter/emulsion-chamber instrument was exposed to high-energy cosmic rays on a balloon. The data on 105 nucleus-nucleus collisions in the energy range 20-65 GeV/nucleon and for incident nuclear charges Zp in the range of 22 to 28 are presented. Inclusive characteristics of particle production on different targets (plastic, emulsion, and lead) are shown and compared with models based on the superposition of nucleon-nucleus interactions. Features of a subset of the more central collisions with a plastic target and some characteristics of individual events with the highest multiplicity of produced particles are described.

Characteristics of the MSFC, PDS microdensitometer

The results of several parametric studies carried out on the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Photometric Data System PDS-10 microdensitometer are summarized for the purposes of documenting the operation and limitations of the system for inhouse research and to provide a bench mark for comparison with other microdensitometers. The results are grouped into four general areas. These are: (1) system overall stability to drift, (2) photometric linearity and noise, (3) reproducibility, and (4) scanning performance. Test data taken in order to evaluate the interdependency of scan speed, noise and position are included. Shown also are results of tests for system stability, reproducibility, stray light and PMT settling time.

Measurement of heavy cosmic rays above 20 GeV/n in passive detectors - Preliminary results from JACEE-3

It is pointed out that the JACEE-3 experiment combined electronic counters and an emulsion chamber to study nucleus-nucleus interactions between 20 and 100 GeV/n. In the present paper, a description is given of the use of the passive detector stack. The electronic position detectors facilitate the event location, taking into account a determination of the incident angles. CR-39 plastic plates were placed just below the proportional counters to enhance tracking accuracy. The JACEE-3 emulsion chamber consists of three parts, including the charge module, the target module, and the calorimeter module. The charge module is mainly used in track identification. The obtained results are also discussed, giving attention to event number and tracking efficiency, interaction measurements, and the inelasticity distribution.
