Recent advances in error estimation and adaptive improvement of finite element calculations

Recent advances in adaptive finite elements are summarized. General concepts behind a posteriori error estimation, h-method data management, and algorithms for fluid-mechanics applications are then examined, and some results of numerical experiments with new adaptive codes are given. Numerical examples include supersonic flow over a 20-deg ramp, supersonic flow in expansion corners, the reflecting-shock problem, and the rotating-cone problem. Finally, future directions of research in the field are outlined.

Numerical analysis of some problems related to the mechanics of pneumatic tires: Finite deformation/rolling contact of a viscoelastic cylinder and finite deformation of cord-reinforced rubber composites

The formulation and numerical analysis of several problems related to the behavior of pneumatic tires are considered. These problems include the general rolling contact problem of a rubber-like viscoelastic cylinder undergoing finite deformations and the finite deformation of cord-reinforced rubber composites. New finite element models are developed for these problems. Numerical results obtained for several representative cases are presented.

Analysis of hourglass instabilities and control in underintegrated finite element methods

Belytschko et al. (1981, 1984) has developed stabilization methods for the treatment of underintegrated FEM problems; these methods involve the computation of an underintegrated stiffness matrix, which is rank-deficient, and the addition of a stabilization matrix which effectively eliminates the spurious modes. An attempt is presently made to give this a priori stabilization method a mathematical means of support. Attention is also given to an a posteriority stabilization method for hourglass control, in which an approximate solution of the underintegrated system is obtained and then subjected to a special projection in order to eliminate the hourglass modes. A proof is obtained for the convergence of this stabilized underintegrated approximation to the exact solution of a model problem at almost the same rate (as the mesh is refined) as the fully integrated solutions.

Stability and Convergence of Underintegrated Finite Element Approximations

The effects of underintegration on the numerical stability and convergence characteristics of certain classes of finite element approximations were analyzed. Particular attention is given to hourglassing instabilities that arise from underintegrating the stiffness matrix entries and checkerboard instabilities that arise from underintegrating constrain terms such as those arising from incompressibility conditions. A fundamental result reported here is the proof that the fully integrated stiffness is restored in some cases through a post-processing operation.

A numerical analysis of contact and limit-point behavior in a class of problems of finite elastic deformation

Finite element methods for the analysis of bifurcations, limit-point behavior, and unilateral frictionless contact of elastic bodies undergoing finite deformation are presented. Particular attention is given to the development and application of Riks-type algorithms for the analysis of limit points and exterior penalty methods for handling the unilateral constraints. Applications focus on the problem of finite axisymmetric deformations, snap-through, and inflation of thick rubber spherical shells.

SPAR improved structure/fluid dynamic analysis capability

The capability of analyzing a coupled dynamic system of flowing fluid and elastic structure was added to the SPAR computer code. A method, developed and adopted for use in SPAR utilizes the existing assumed stress hybrid plan element in SPAR. An operational mode was incorporated in SPAR which provides the capability for analyzing the flaw of a two dimensional, incompressible, viscous fluid within rigid boundaries. Equations were developed to provide for the eventual analysis of the interaction of such fluids with an elastic solid.

Finite element methods for nonlinear elastostatic problems in rubber elasticity

A number of finite element methods for the analysis of nonlinear problems in rubber elasticity are outlined. Several different finite element schemes are discussed. These include the augmented Lagrangian method, continuation or incremental loading methods, and associated Riks-type methods which have the capability of incorporating limit point behavior and bifurcations. Algorithms for the analysis of limit point behavior and bifurcations are described and the results of several numerical experiments are presented. In addition, a brief survey of some recent work on modelling contact and friction in elasticity problems is given. These results pertain to the use of new nonlocal and nonlinear friction laws.

Comments on some problems in computational penetration mechanics

Three problem areas in the computer simulation of large-scale penetration mechanics problems are briefly discussed. These are numerical instabilities due to incomplete integration of the momentum or continuity equations, constitutive modelling, and friction effects.

Finite elements of nonlinear continua.

The finite element method is extended to a broad class of practical nonlinear problems, treating both theory and applications from a general and unifying point of view. The thermomechanical principles of continuous media and the properties of the finite element method are outlined, and are brought together to produce discrete physical models of nonlinear continua. The mathematical properties of the models are analyzed, and the numerical solution of the equations governing the discrete models is examined. The application of the models to nonlinear problems in finite elasticity, viscoelasticity, heat conduction, and thermoviscoelasticity is discussed. Other specific topics include the topological properties of finite element models, applications to linear and nonlinear boundary value problems, convergence, continuum thermodynamics, finite elasticity, solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations, and discrete models of the nonlinear thermomechanical behavior of dissipative media.

Analysis of finite deformations of elastic solids by the finite element method.

Finite element applications, particularly to analyses of finite deformations in elastic solids, are reviewed, along with the difficulties encountered in the formulation of certain problems and in their numerical solution. Various approaches are discussed for overcoming these and other difficulties. A computer program designed for finite elasticity problems is described, and several numerical examples are presented.
