Recent developments in EHF Satcom technology

The state-of-the-art in EHF Satcom technology is assessed and hardware samples are described. Travelling wave tube amplifiers provide up to 30 percent efficiency for 20 GHz spaceborne operations and up to 20 percent efficiency at 30/44 GHz in ground operations. Solid-state power amplifiers incorporate FET and IMPATT diode technologies for 20-44 GHz transmissions using GaAs FETs and Si or GaAs diodes. Noise is reduced with loss image-enhanced mixers coupled to an IF FET amplifier, resulting ultimately in 6-7 dB noise levels compared to 19 dB gain. Finally, high power varactor upconverters have been developed to provide up to 50 mW RF output at at least 10 percent efficiency at frequencies up to 50 GHz.

IMPATT power building blocks for 20 GHz spaceborne transmit amplifier

Single-stage circulator coupled IMPATT building block constituents of a 20-GHz solid state power amplifier (SSPA) currently under development for spaceborne downlink transmitter usage have been demonstrated as providing 1.5 to 2.0W RF power output at 4 to 5 dB operating gain over a 1 GHz bandwidth. Using either commercially available or recently developed in-house GaAs Schottky Read-profile IMPATT diodes, DC/RF power added efficiencies of 14 to 15% were achieved in these amplifier stages. A two stage IMPATT driver amplifier with similar RF output power capability exhibited 13 + or - 0.5 dB operating gain over a 1 GHz bandwidth.

Small signal amplifiers and converters for millimeter wave Satcom systems

This paper describes the current state of the art and the various design tradeoffs encompassing the variety of small signal active circuit 'building blocks' deployed in millimeter wave Satcom receivers and transmitters. Included in this catagory are such low noise receiver components as parametric and FET amplifiers and low loss mixer downconverters as well as low level transmitter driver components such as resistive and varactor upconverters. Current and projected state of the art performance data will be presented along with specific examples of operating hardware.

High q band-pass resonators utilizing composite band-stop resonator pairs

Resonator pairs are formed of composite series- or parallel-connected transmission-line elements, which are exclusively quarter-wavelength half-wave-length lines. Resonator elements are constructed with microstriplines in parallel planes separated by dielectric. Striplines of coaxial transmission lines can be used in construction also.

High-Q bandpass resonators utilizing bandstop resonator pairs

A high-Q bandpass resonators utilizing composite bandstop resonator pairs is reported. The bandstop resonator pairs are formed of composite series or parallel connected realizable transmission line elements. The elements are exclusively either quarter-wavelength lines or half-wavelength lines.
