Electronic and magnetic structures of a mixed triple perovskite: Ba 3 NiRuIrO 9

In search of spin-orbit coupling driven nonmagnetic J = 0 ground state and excitonic magnetism, various pentavalent iridates have been studied in recent years. However, a finite moment was observed in most of the cases due to solid state effects. Here, in this work, we investigate the electronic and magnetic structure of 6H hexagonal compound Ba 3 NiRuIrO 9 , where Ir 5+ is present along with magnetic Ni 2+ and Ru 5+ ions. Magnetic susceptibility measurements and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) experiments demonstrate the appearance of short-range magnetic ordering below 170 K and a long-range antiferromagnetic ordering below 80 K. The refinement of the NPD pattern further shows that the Ru and Ir moments interact antiferromagnetically within the dimer and interact ferromagnetically with the Ni sublattice. These experimental findings have been complemented by first-principles density functional theory calculations incorporating spin-orbit coupling effects and electronic correlations for the transitional metal d states. The computed magnetocrystalline anisotropy is also found to be significant and the crystallographic c axis comes out to be the easy axis of magnetization, consistent with the spin alignment direction found from NPD. This study shows that the mixed ruthenate iridate triple perovskite series is a promising family to study the interplay among spin-orbit coupling, electron correlation, and electron filling as a variety of Ba 3 M RuIrO 9 with M as a transition metal ion, rare-earth ion, and alkali metal ions can be synthesized.

Giant uniaxial negative thermal expansion in FeZr 2 alloy over a wide temperature range

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) alloys possess great practical merit as thermal offsets for positive thermal expansion due to its metallic properties. However, achieving a large NTE with a wide temperature range remains a great challenge. Herein, a metallic framework-like material FeZr 2 is found to exhibit a giant uniaxial (1D) NTE with a wide temperature range (93-1078 K, $\overline{α}_{l}$=–34.01×10 –6 K –1 ). Such uniaxial NTE is the strongest in all metal-based NTE materials. The direct experimental evidence and DFT calculations reveal that the origin of giant NTE is the couple with phonons, flexible framework-like structure, and soft bonds. Interestingly, the present metallic FeZr 2 excites giant 1D NTE mainly driven by high-frequency optical branches. It is unlike the NTE in traditional framework materials, which are generally dominated by low energy acoustic branches. In the present study, a giant uniaxial NTE alloy is reported, and the complex mechanism has been revealed. It is of great significance for understanding the nature of thermal expansion and guiding the regulation of thermal expansion.

Entangled core/shell magnetic structure driven by surface magnetic symmetry-breaking in Cr 2 O 3 nanoparticles

Bulk Cr 2 O 3 is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) oxide that exhibits the magnetoelectric effect at room temperature, with neither spontaneous magnetization nor net electric polarization. These physical properties stem from a subtle competition between exchange and crystal field interactions. In this article, we exploit the symmetry breaking at the surface of Cr 2 O 3 nanoparticles for unbalancing this delicate physical equilibrium. The emerging weak ferromagnetic signal we observe persists up to near room temperature (≈ 270 K) at which the antiferromagnetic order disappears. In addition, an exchange-bias effect, that rapidly decreases on heating from low temperature up to 30 K, is resistant to thermal disorder above 200 K. In conclusion, our findings point to the possible formation of an entangled core/shell magnetic structure, where pinned uncompensated spins at the shell are randomly distributed in a low-temperature spin-glass ordering, with low net magnetic moment and an ordering temperature governed by the AFM Néel temperature.
