Ar-40 - Ar-39 Geochronology on Apollo 12 Regolith

The Apollo 12 landing site in Oceanus Procellarum is located about 400 km south of the rim of Copernicus. The geochemical and petrographical characterization of the Apollo 12 lunar samples have been extensively studied. The site is characterized by a high proportion of nonmare material with KREEP composition and mare basalts low in Th. Recent studies have focused on the geochemistry of the nonmare material and on inferring the origin of these materials. Previous geochronological investigations of Apollo 12 mare basalts have yielded ages ranging from 3.1 to 3.3 Ga. On the other hand, nonmare materials have yielded older ages between 3.8 to 4.0 Ga; with the sole exception of a single lunar granite fragment from sample 12033. This granite sample has an Ar-40 - Ar-39 age of 800 +/- 15 Ma. This resetting age has been interpreted as the age of the Copernicus crater since a ray from this crater crosses the landing site. Here we present new 40Ar-39Ar geochronological data on three samples of nonmare material from the Apollo 12 regolith in order to further constrain the age and source of this material.

New Millenium Deep Space Tiny Transmitter: First Phase of a Digital Transponder

An advanced technology X- and Ka-band (8 and 32 GHz) Tiny Transmitter is being developed at JPL for the New Millenium program and is described in this paper. The Tiny Transponder is the first phase of development of the Tiny Transponder which will incorporate recent advancements in miniaturization and flexibility of radio systems by utilizing digital radio techniques.

Ka-Band Tiny Transmitter for the New Millenium Program

The size, mass and cost of telecommunications systems on deep space missions have increased at almost an exponential rate over the last thirty years. Great cost and size reduction of these systems can be achieved by reducing the cost and size of the transponder component of the radio subsystem. An advanced technology X-and Ka-band (8 and 32 GHz) Tiny Transmitter is being developed at JPL for the New Millenium program and is described in this paper.

The EUVE proposal database and scheduling system

The proposal database and scheduling system for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer will be described. The proposal database has been implemented to take input for approved observations selected by the EUVE Peer Review Panel and output target information suitable for the scheduling system to digest. The scheduling system is a hybrid of the SPIKE program and EUVE software which checks spacecraft constraints, produces a proposed schedule and selects spacecraft orientations with optimal configurations for acquiring star trackers, etc. This system has been used to schedule the In Orbit Calibration activities that took place this summer, following the EUVE launch in early June 1992. The implemented strategy has implications for the selection of approved targets, which have impacted the Peer Review process. In addition, it will be discussed how the proposal database, founded on Sybase, controls the processing of EUVE Guest Observer data.

Digital frequency synthesizer for radar astronomy

The digital frequency synthesizer (DFS) is an integral part of the programmable local oscillator (PLO) which is being developed for the NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) and radar astronomy. Here, the theory of operation and the design of the DFS are discussed, and the design parameters in application for the Goldstone Solar System Radar (GSSR) are specified. The spectral purity of the DFS is evaluated by analytically evaluating the output spectrum of the DFS. A novel architecture is proposed for the design of the DFS with a frequency resolution of 1/2(exp 48) of the clock frequency (0.35 mu Hz at 100 MHz), a phase resolution of 0.0056 degrees (16 bits), and a frequency spur attenuation of -96 dBc.

Large-Constraint-Length, Fast Viterbi Decoder

Scheme for efficient interconnection makes VLSI design feasible. Concept for fast Viterbi decoder provides for processing of convolutional codes of constraint length K up to 15 and rates of 1/2 to 1/6. Fully parallel (but bit-serial) architecture developed for decoder of K = 7 implemented in single dedicated VLSI circuit chip. Contains six major functional blocks. VLSI circuits perform branch metric computations, add-compare-select operations, and then store decisions in traceback memory. Traceback processor reads appropriate memory locations and puts out decoded bits. Used as building block for decoders of larger K.
