Ribbon Reduces Spiking in Electron-Beam Welding

Spiking in electron-beam welding reduced by placing high-vapor-pressure substance along path of electron beam. Strip of metal having vapor pressure higher than base metal at same temperature placed in slot machined along weld line. Strip vaporizes as beam strikes it, and vapor pressure keeps surface tension from closing off top of channel. Technique used successfully on nickel alloys and aluminum alloys and effective on steel and titanium.

Absorbing-sphere model for calculating ion-ion recombination total cross sections.

An 'absorbing-sphere' model based on the Landau-Zener method is set up for calculating the upper limit thermal energy (300 K) reaction rate and the energy dependence of the total cross sections. The crucial parameter needed for the calculation is the electron detachment energy for the outer electron on the anion. It is found that the cross sections increase with decreasing electron detachment energy.

Theoretical studies of ionic and atomic impact phenomena

An absorbing sphere model based on the Landau-Zener method was developed for calculating the energy dependence of the total cross sections for the reaction A(+) + B(-) yields A star + B + Delta E, in which A or B may be atomic or molecular species. It was found that the cross sections were highly dependent on the electron detachment energy of B(-). The ionization total cross sections for Ne star (2p5 3s 3P) + Ar were calculated over a large energy range and compared with experiments.
